    Re: The Last Stand

I just read the original post - but why do you think hunters will learn of your location if you contact F & G ?

    Re: The Last Stand

Did you bait the fence? They need to get a good zap on the nose or mouth to learn to stay away from the fence. I wrap a small piece of fish in foil & wrap it around the wires in a few spots. I...

Re: Advice on Honey B Healthy

I was given a colony of bees along with syrup containing HBH. The syrup quickly started a robbing frenzy.

I don't plan to ever use it again.

    Re: Any Suggestions?

Update: I was able to place a frame of open brood into a nuc, along with the small combs & a little lemon grass oil. The colony has relocated into the nuc & seem to be fine.

Re: How long can I wait?

If you haven't hived them yet, I think the longer you wait the harder it will be.
I've had trouble keeping soft combs attached to top bars with hair clips, zip ties or wire. I had better luck using...

Re: Time to gather smoker fuel

Folks at the local bee club say using sumac in your smoker helps control mites. I don't know if it's true, but supposedly it has a chemical ( I can't remember the name ) also found in rhubarb leaves....

Re: Is it over, or just beginning

After having trouble with wire & fishing line, I now use wooden skewers pressure fit vertically in grooved frames. They hold up well & are easy to set up.

Re: I'm worried, should I be?

Was this a package or a Nuc? With a package the older bees die off & they may struggle a bit before they make progress. It sounds like it's only been about 6 weeks. You should be able to tell if the...

    Re: Any Suggestions?

I spoke to folks at the local bee club, but was unable to get a bee vac. Today I was moving hives & equipment, trying to gain access to the bees inside the cinder block, and they began to swarm...

    Any Suggestions?

Well, at first it looked like a small swarm leaving the hive, but they didn't go anywhere. So, then I thought maybe it was a mating flight and everybody following along. Anyhow, I stopped worrying...

    Capped QC question:

When finding capped queen cells in a hive, is there any way to tell how old they are? I'm asking because I recently found capped & uncapped cells in one of my hives.

    Thanks for any help, Nardi

    Is it possible?

Unfortunately, I have mismatched equipment. I'm trying to switch to all medium 8 frame boxes. I have recently made a few splits & started a few nucs. Now I need to add boxes to my 8 frame hives, &...

    Re: Some older super frames

I've cleaned frames by cutting out the wax & giving them a good soak in a 5 gal. bucket of water with about a cup of bleach, then scrub with a stiff brush & dry in the sun.

Thank you both for your input/suggestions. I'm going to add a frame with eggs/tiny larvae tomorrow before I leave for work. Hopefully, the weather will cooperate.

    Another Mistake -

Oops I did it again -

I made a split (nuc) with a capped queen cell on 6/13. Everything was fine. At one point, I thought they were being robbed. When I checked all cells had emerged, & they...

    Am I doing this right?

OK, I've been cutting out drone brood & checking for mites. After reading about sugar dusting & knowing I have mites, I decided I should dust my hives. I don't have screened bottom boards, but I did...

Re: How many of you have bears causing problems?

A few days ago, about 8:00pm, I watched a bear walk around my bee yard's electric fence. It stayed at least 3' away, and then went off into the woods. The fence is baited with smoked salmon scraps...

Re: Bears out front, Bees out back

I also had a recent visit from local bruins ( tracks & bear poop near the fence ). Baited the fence with smoked salmon scraps wrapped in foil. All hives are fine.
  25. Re: Creative uses for bee package cages, what's yours?

I've used the screen with duct tape for robber screens; used the center brace bar as an entrance reducer for my nucs; and the complete box as a filter for the overflow pipe of my small pond.
