  1. Re: American Foulbrood outbreak in my 2 day old hive

I think its great that a apiary like Hives & More would take the time to address a question like this and on a public forum!! Outstanding! I wish more apiaries were more customer service oriented. ...

    Re: Ants!

I was just reading a paper that said that ants are effective in killing SHB larvae that pupate in the soil. The life cycle of the SHB requires it to be in the ground in a relatively small radius...

    Re: Catnip information

I have planted an entire packet of catnip seeds and have no plants to show for it. I have been starting them in seedling trays indoors using grow lights and heat mats to give them ideal sprouting...

    Re: Formic acid

Please forgive this question if it seems absurd (I'm a newbee).
Formic acid is exuded naturally by ants when they are in distress. Has anyone tried putting a few dozen large ants into a screened...
  5. Re: Ticks-can't take it any longer. What to do/

How tall is the grass you have to go through to get to the hive? Short grass significantly reduces the living space for the ticks which naturally should reduce the numbers.
  6. Re: 'buzzkill' - dan rather reports on bee deaths among the almonds

red, thanks for replying and trying to enlighten me.
I am a bit confused by your comments, however. From what you wrote, it sounds like there is an abundance of forage sources in the almond groves...
  7. Re: 'buzzkill' - dan rather reports on bee deaths among the almonds

I've seen pictures of the almond groves. Nothing for miles and miles but almond trees. I would call that a very sterile landscape. How can a bee expect to survive in that type of environment? Two...

Still No Word From Bee Supplier

    Hi all,
I am anxiously waiting to hear from the bee supplier for my first nucs but I have gotten no reply emails or phone messages. I found her on Craigs List and she has a web site and appears to...
  10. Re: 4.9 vs. 5.4 bees - What is this and what is the significance

The cell size is only an issue on brood comb, right? Will there be a problem using the 5.4 for the honey supers and a 4.9 for the hive boxes? It's not too much of a big deal to get 50 new frames...
  11. Re: 4.9 vs. 5.4 bees - What is this and what is the significance

    All,
Sorry, but I'm a newbee and am still kind of confused on the cell size. Since the bee is the one pulling the wax for each cell, doesn't it decide how big to make the cell? I just purchased a...

After painting the edges of my hives and letting the paint dry, I rub some paraffin wax on them and it keeps the boxes from sticking to each other.

    Another newbee question......
After freezing the frames, is it okay to keep them in a sealed container in my crawlspace or do I still need to keep them in the light and air?
    Thanks!
