Re: winter feeding how would I do it

If you do put frames of honey in, warm them up first by a radiator or something. Don't lift your inner cover just slide it a few frames to the side. Work fast.

    Re: 2014 die off

I used OA for the mites. There was very little brood in any of the hives. I'll have a look next week and let you know.

    Re: 2014 die off

They seemed to abscond. They were all full of honey and there were no bees burrowed in the comb or clustered. Just about 100 dead bees in the bottom of the hives.
There was no sign of mites either.

    Re: 2014 die off

I lost 50% of my hives. Lots of food. Did mite control. I only had 40 hives. Twenty left in this cold snap. Only 6 hives of 20 froze. Lots of food in all the hives.

Re: old nectar and old pollen for feed

Thanks. I was hoping I could use it. The colonies froze.
I have them sealed and stacked and we just had a good freeze so I'm good for now. Although those wax moths always seam to find a way in....

old nectar and old pollen for feed

I had a few hives die with lots of pollen and uncapped nectar. Can I feed that back to my spring packages, or will it sour by then.

    uncapped nectar

I've had a few hives die and left lots of uncapped nectar and pollen. Can I feed that back to my spring packages, or will it sour by then? I've fed them capped honey, but wondered about the nectar...

    die off

I lost quite a few hives this year. Then this cold won't help.
I've notice bee prices rising in the north.

Re: Way to prevent crystalized honey

Boil water. Then shut it off and place the jar in. It will liquify it without pasteurizing it.
  14. Re: Oxalic acid's specific activity against varroa mites

I think the OA chokes the mites and particles are too small to harm the bees. I'm not sure exactly but I am sure it works. I vaporize my hives with OA and when I pull out my bottom board its loaded...

Re: I would like to be a commercial beek

Sounds like some long hours.... For me, since I'm not pollinating its not as labor intensive. There is a lot of work even in the winter... Assembling supers, frames, picking up jars, equip, labels,...

Re: Granulated Sugar vs Sugar Water

    Haha
We have pure cane granulated sugar too. But granulated sugar that simply says granulated is harder for bees to process.

Re: I would like to be a commercial beek

Go for it. Building your own hives is more work than its worth. The price of wood vs assembling hives. Build the expensive parts. Bottom boards and outer covers. Inner covers too. That's a good place...

    Re: anxious about OA vaporizing

No problem Danno. I never heard of using a pot with steam. My vaporizor heats the OA and vaporizes without water. I wear a respirator.

    Re: anxious about OA vaporizing

OA is a very effective treatment, especially this time of year. I'm not sure about SNK's pot in the hive. I bought mine from a guy in BC Canada. He has no visa payment so you have to send a check.

  23. Re: Can my bees survive the winter in 3 8 frame mediums?

    Re: Question about a swarm

Its probably too late to make a new queen. Your swarm may have an old queen. The older the queen the meaner your bees are. Or you are queen less. Suit up and look for your queen. If she isn't there...
