    Re: unorganized swarm?

Hive 1 is still full of bees.

I found the queen and about 10 bees in the swarm hive. The queen looked "odd". While I was trying to get the camera ready to take a photo, she disappeared...I guess...

    unorganized swarm?

I have witnessed two primary swarms during my first season (recaptured one). Yesterday evening I arrived home after work to find Hive #1 had again drained a quart of 1:1 sugar water. They have been...

    Re: What are they doing?

I did the same thing between two hives and entrance reducers helped a lot - down to just one or two bee traffic. Also moved the wet frames a lot further away. Both hives were going after each other.

Re: Getting the Bees off of you

I am a newbee, but so far I have not had a bunch of bees after me. Usually, it is just one or two that just seem very intent to drive me away - bumping into my veil and buzzing round and round. I can...

    Re: slatted rack

I assume this is the under-side of the slatted bottom. The bees would enter the hive, travel over the ladder comb and up thru the slats into the brood area. I wonder if the bees put the comb there to...

    Re: slatted rack

I am researching the slatted rack as well, and it seems that some designs have the slats as thick/deep as the unit (~2" deep), and some have the slats as only 1/2" thick/deep - so there would be open...
  9. Re: Inspections - digital camera can help compensate for lack of experience

I also like to take photos of frames during inspections for review afterwards. Have seen queens that I missed during the inspection, and can zoom in to verify egg laying. My wife usually takes the...

    Queen cell evollution?

Do all queen cells start with an egg - and then the normal cell is built up into queen cell, or do the bees sometimes create a queen cell and then get the queen to lay in it (could be...

    Re: Not Foraging on Property

Also a new beek, and also seeing similar. My bees (4 hives) are busy bringing in nectar and pollen, but I rarely see them on my plants. Not sure what their source is, but they must like it better...

    Re: Nectar in brood cells

SS1 - yes it was exciting! I had a plan B (no pun) in case I did not feel secure with the setup, but it worked out, and this swarm hive is the most active of my 4 hives.

    Hive #1 (the problem hive)...

Re: Taking Bets are There Bees In the Box?

I would guess no, but I have a related question: Why would bees build comb on the outside. That would seem to be against their nature. Could they survive a winter with exposed comb? Is this common?
  14. Re: filters/ strainers for 5 gallon honey bucket- plastic or stainless steel?

    From wikipedia:
Pollen grains come in a wide variety of shapes (most often spherical), sizes, and surface markings characteristic of the species (see electron micrograph, right). Pollen grains of...
  15. Re: Compensation - Grower or Beekeeper (Pollinator)?

Sounds to me that - since you don't "need or want" the pollination, it is just a matter of allowing the beekeeper to rent a portion of your property to keep bees. So, whatever rent is acceptable to...

    Low entrance on tree

My wife recently found a tree with honey bees on our property. I expect it came from a hive that swarmed a few weeks ago. (this is my first season)

I will leave the bees to manage for themselves...

I was able to touch base with my mentor who pointed out that if the hive swarmed (May 10), then the old brood has emerged, and the new queen has not started laying yet. Not surprised...
