    Re: do racoons eat honeybees?

Thank you for your responses. Since the raccoons in my yard have not tipped nor opened any of my hives, I will not worry about them eating any bees--unlike skunks.

    Re: do racoons eat honeybees?

I see--the raccoon(s) in my yard have not messed with the outer/inner cover, but I was curious if they will eat the bees themselves as they come out of the hive. Of course they'd get stung while...

    do racoons eat honeybees?

We have seen at least one racoon going around our back yard in the past week. Do racoons eat honeybees? Our hives are 18' above the ground, with bottom entrances. If racoons are a problem indeed, I...

Re: how can I feed some honey back to the bees?

I put the honey in mason jars (no water added, it will frement in the 90F weather), and fed them straight to the bees. Once I put the jars upside down, I could see little dropplets of honey to come...

Re: how can I feed some honey back to the bees?

It is their honey and came out of my uncapping tank where a few SHB larvae started to swim in the honey a few days later--now all SHB are dead. No worries about diseases.

how can I feed some honey back to the bees?

I have some honey that I would like to feed back to the bees. If I put it in mason jars with the perforated lid (the ones that I use to feed sugar water back to them) will the bees be able to access...

    Re: Great year for swarms

This was the swarmiest year in Atlanta in my 8 years of beekeeping.
  8. Re: What would you sell a 10-frame deep hive for?

Thank you for your suggestions--the price would be for 10-frames of bees/honey and not fox the deep box/cover/bottom board. My thinking is as follows: if I wait a couple more weeks, I can buy an...
  9. What would you sell a 10-frame deep hive for?

This season I ended up catching swarms that I babysat in 10-frame deep hives--about 5 frames of honey and 5 frames of capped brood. I am thinking of selling one of those, what would be a reasonable...
  10. Re: trouble engaging a maxant power extractor PLEASE HELP

Thank you Maxant for the prompt response and for mailing of a free new nut. The extractor works fine after a small adjustement. I am impressed by the customer service of Maxant, and by the superior...
  11. Re: Video of angry swarm of suspected Africanized bees in San Diego

The video shows an ignorant person in the middle of a honeybee swarm who freaks out and thinks (based on their numbers and flight pattern) that they are out there to kill them. It appears that the...
  12. Re: trouble engaging a maxant power extractor PLEASE HELP

I'll call Maxant Monday. I am sure there is a simple solution given that the dial and the motor work fine, and so does the basket inside the exctractor. It's only the connection of the motor+basket...
  13. trouble engaging a maxant power extractor PLEASE HELP

I have a power 6F Maxant extractor that I used for 2 years and I am having trouble engaging it. Theere is an orange plastic nut that locks the motor to the rest of the extractor, and I move it down...

    slimed super of capped honey?

Sadly one of my weak hives must have absconded and left behind a super full of capped honey with some SHB on it. I pulled the super and put it in the freezer where I'll keep for a week. As far as I...

    Re: my swarms swarmed

I usually feed swarms some jars of syrup until they build up, or they do not take the syrup. This gives them a boost, and may convince them more to stay in the box. I agree that a strong swarm can...

    my swarms swarmed

Two swarms that I caught a month ago (and fed) built up so fast that they swarmed on me last week, after running out of 10 deep frames. This has never happened to me before. This is the swarmiest...

Re: 32 swarms in 38 traps

It's been the most swarmy year in Atlanta that I remember of. Every day there is a swarm in my neighborhood in the past week or so (some from my bees too). It's a phenomenal year. Stavros
  19. Re: how to combine a laying worker hive with a queenright hive?

Update: I did a newspaper combine of one deep of the laying worker with another deep of a laying queen inserting a super inbeetween and no more laying worker, and no more drone brood. But something...
  20. Re: How many pounds of honey are there in a 5 gallon bucket?

OK, yantabulla's answer after the conversion is 12.5 pounds of honey per gallon, and Genos's is 12 pounds of honey per gallon. Close enough. Stavros
  21. How many pounds of honey are there in a 5 gallon bucket?

Curious, do you know? Thank you. Stavros
  22. Re: how to combine a laying worker hive with a queenright hive?

Thank you for your replies, but I am still confused. I do not want to shake the bees because their comb is too delicate (foundationless deep frames built in the last few weeks), and it's not very...
  23. how to combine a laying worker hive with a queenright hive?

I have a queenright hive in a 10 frame deep with a great laying queen, and a queenless, laying worker hive in another 10 frame deep. The laying worker hive comes from a swarm a month ago and they...

    bees in a dead tree

A neighbor has a dead oak tree that is home to some feral bees going in and out through a hole 13 feet up. Last year I caught a swarm from them (that's how I found out about them) and this year I...
  25. Re: How quickly can a hive eact 5 pounds of dry sugar?

I did not moisten it, however there is moisture rising from the hive in the inner cover, so the sugar gets natural moisture. I will check in a week this time to see if the bees are eating it, or...
