It was a morning picture. summer's been cool, thus far. Lots of activity, and bees, just not in that particular picture.
Only variation was using mediums instead of shallows. Checkerboarding is amazing. Hope I'm not violating the board rules regarding pictures.
Link instead of picture so not to violate picture...
Just about the deepest, longest gash I ever got was from one of these, to my bare hand, just handling them. Talk about sharp!!!!
Threw them away. Don't need them.
3rd year Beekeeper. Never treated with chemicals (well, once with Fumigilin, first year).
I use SBB's exclusively. Essential oil patties occasionally but not religiously. I don't monitor for...
I use all SBB's (6 hives). Did leave the slider board off most all winter, with two exceptions. When the temp dipped to super cold, and when the wind blew hard. Otherwise, left the sliders off. ...
Joe,
Checkerboarding is new to me, too. Been reading about it for the last 3 yrs, this is the first year have had enough comb/hives to try.
According to various interpretationss of Walt, you...
In the Columbia Basin, we have the milder winters than the west side, or especially Spokane. However, it is early Spring here, as well. The bees are out flying every day, bringing in lots of pollen...
I've heard that once you have comb built up, that you can decrease a 10 frame hive by one frame without violating bee space. The advantages would be, ease of removing frames, thicker supers (more...
Sorry for the late reply.
I just have 6 hives, all with SBB's. They all also have reasonable wind barriers. However, having just a few hives, can afford to micromanage. Therefore, I leave them...

Spent a couple years in Germany back during the cold war, couldn't drink what they called beer when I returned home. Started homebrewing about 12 years ago. My favorite beers come from...
Whew!
I've been away for a few weeks, look what I've missed! A compendium on nectar mngt. Specifically, "Checkerboarding". Wow, what a battle that almost was. The thread is up to 12 pages. ...
BDJ,
I am just north of you in Tri-cities. We're pretty small time, had 10 gallons honey this year. Kept 4 gallons for my own meade adventures.
Anyway, wife and I sell the surplus honey...
Thank You!
That makes sense. This is my first year with surplus honey. Didn't even think I'd have any this year until the swarm season hit and ran out of extra hive bodies.

Hi. I have 6 hives, with 10 medium supers on various ones, some hives more supers than others. I have already harvested my first honey ever, 10 gallons about 6 weeks ago. There was some uncapped...
I was reading somewhere on beesource about after the freeze (either natural or with a freezer), spray comb with Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt). It sure sounds a lot safer than than what I've just been...
If they're accepting the hive, I would definitely wait until sundown before moving. That way you get all the foragers as well. Also, the bees don't seem to mind hive moving as much in the evening. ...
Hey, thanks everyone!
Scout bees, now that makes sense. I'll keep a good eye on them and update when able.
Thanks again!!!
I built two of the sonatube version traps (thanks everyone!). Put one frame of older comb, sandwiched between two deep frames of foundation. sprinkled some lemon grass oil on the entrance area.

Thanks Rebel and Just.
Yes, it was for free. But I'm new at all this. My friend helped me with some bees in a church belltower the prior week, this was supposed to be for him as he'd lost a...
Got a call few weeks back about a bunch of bees living in some guys atticspace. Went to check it out with another beek friend of mine. This guy had a semi-finished attic space and didn't mind us...

Keep looking! I had the same problem. None of the box stores carried 1/8". The place that had it in our area was a small, local hardware store that I almost never go to. I had my choice of two or...
I'm with magnet man,
Still am at a loss to tell how long to keep the sundance trap on the hive. Any suggestions?
