    Re: hayforkquilter

I assume you don't want to save it -- if you do want to save it for consumption, the alcohol needs to be fit for consumption.

I would try freezing which will make it brittle instead of...

Re: Supercedure Split to save Queen?

If your hive is strong enough to split that is a good plan.

    Re: quiet box not quiet

If you cover (as winevines says) and have an exit (maybe you already do) so if bees want to fly out they can, that may solve the defensiveness.
You didn't say how long your inspections take but seem...

    Re: Canola picture

"Canola" markets better than "rape seed" -- thus the renaming (or so I read somewhere).

    Re: Single frame "harvest"

Especially if you didn't freeze, be alert for wax moths and Small hive beetles which can make a mess while it is dripping. I think first honey is among the best!

    Re: balling of the queen

do a youtube search on Michael Palmer and you'll find a short video of how to determine if the bees have accepted the caged queen.

Re: best way to draw out medium super?

also watch out for robbing, especially with HBH -- I would put robber screen on now.

take hive 1. remove top cover/inner cover.
put the division screen in place.
open the entrance you want (maybe a top side entrance).

take the box you are using for a nuc. put it on the...

If it caused damage, you really ought to buy her a new pan.
  14. Re: Are stings supposed to feel good, almost addictive

The positive attitude is a good thing, for those without dangerous allergies. Maybe it is only the placebo effect, but thinking "that one will be good for my arthritis" helps take the sting out.

    Re: pH for sugar water?

So I went to get some vitamin C -- the "other" ingredients listed had me wondering. Do folks have preferred brands or sources?

Re: The 150 rule (heat plus humidity)

Mann Lake sells a little blue "spongy" headband. I wet one or two for around neck, one for around head -- it cools slightly and helps keep sweat off my glasses. At break, rewet and switch around. ...
  17. Re: # of frames needed to make extractor use worthwhile?

I'd probably put it in a nuc box, wrap in a heavy duty garbage bag, and freeze until you have more. I agree the set up and clean up is best done for larger amounts, unless you can access a small 2...

    Re: serious varroa infestation

I agree -- if temps are going to be under 90--- which I expect they are for you, quick strips will cause a massive mite drop and in a week to ten days you can see some progress.
  21. Re: Things went from good to questionable, to bad...predators and the hives

Here near the mountains of Virginia bear encounters are more frequent this spring because there was a poor acorn crop last fall -- or so I am told. The DNR or its equivalent is issuing kill permits...
