I have to rant about something. I bought two Dadant copper garden style outer covers and I like them a lot. They cost $67.75 and are well made. They look like this:13093
    Months later I caught a...

Re: bees dragging out pupa. why?

Filmed with my iPhone 5s. I suit up when I inspect my hives but when I'm just hanging out filming, I'm usually just wearing flip flops and shorts. My bees are not aggressive but they sting me...

Re: bees dragging out pupa. why?

I still feel bad for the drones being evicted like that. Since they don't sting, I'm tempted to bring them in the house but I know they would just die anyway. Maybe I could add them to my oatmeal and...

Re: bees dragging out pupa. why?

Thanks. The Ultimate Hive stands are from BetterBee. Supers (all 8 frame mediums) were from Kelley Bees and are pine I think. The copper garden style tops came from Dadant. Low VOC paint from Lowes....

Me either. I'll look that up in The Hive and the Honey Bee tonight. It might also be in ABC and XYZ.

Re: bees dragging out pupa. why?

They are also evicting drones. I filmed that too at the same hive just minutes after the pupa vid. I hope you're right Shane. I keep hoping my bees won't get mites because they have Russian genes,...

    bees dragging out pupa. why?

I film my bees almost every day. Yesterday I saw them drag out dozens of pupa. I googled this and never found a definitive answer as to why. Any thoughts? I picked all of them up and did not see...

    Comb building observation

I’m a newbee that installed packages on April 1. All of my Lang hives have foundation-less frames and of course my TBH is foundation-less. I fed 1:1 before the flow started and they built lots of...

    Re: TBH observation plans

I started out with the plans on Michael Bush's website here: http://bushfarms.com/beestopbarhives.htm

Those plans don't include a roof or legs or observation window so I just played around with...

    Re: ? Bee Watering

As you can see in the first picture, when I started out my water sources were 2x3' plastic tubs with rocks in them so the bees had something to land on. The bees loved it. But about 3 bees per day...

Re: bee sting- 1st bad reaction

It just occurred to me that it's irresponsible for us to say continue beekeeping if it might kill you! Listen to you Dr, not me. ;)

Re: bee sting- 1st bad reaction

If you have insurance, an Epi-Pen will cost you less than your $350 ER visit (I think I paid $150) so I say get the pen and keep beekeeping. I have a pen for just in case. My stings swell pretty good...

My drones were leaving too. And also being kicked out by the workers. I'd see two workers gang up on a drone. I thought they only kicked out drones in the fall? Or if stores are low. Neither are the...

Re: 5 gallon buckets- Home Depot or food grade?

That's what I have. Buckets that held pickles. If after cleaning they still smelled like pickles, would that make the honey smell/taste like pickles?

Hive scent made into a cologne/perfume

For me, part of the joy of sitting in my apiary, watching the bees, is smelling that hive smell. I can't pin down what it's made of. I guess a combination of wood, honey, pollen, wax, bee bread,...

LOL. I didn't actually shoot a rocket at my hives. The video was made with an iPhone app called Action Movie. I'd never hurt my bees. Although it would be fun to shoot a rocket! ;)
