  1. Re: Went to put a replacement queen in the hive and found brood

I had not thought of that, thanks
  2. Re: Any Boy Souters or former Boy Scouts out there?

Unfortunately, I agree. Have been a Scoutmaster for many years, my feeling is that the likelihood of reintroduction of a merit badge that "exposes the BSA to liability" is remote. The program is...

    Purple pollen

Got a new finding this year, they are filling the pollen chambers with purple pollen. Have a lot of purple thistle they they seem to like, could this be the source?
  4. Went to put a replacement queen in the hive and found brood

I got three packages this year to replace depleted hives after last summer's drought. I was not paying attention so I opened the wrong end of one queen cage (non candy end) and in seconds she was out...
  5. Re: Any Boy Souters or former Boy Scouts out there?

Have been a long time scouter and now Beek. I have held back because getting them reasonable equipment is expensive. Get a few of them stung and I am concerned the interest would wane quickly.

Re: Africanized Bees - ABJ News Article

Last seaon one of my hives superceded. Here in S Texas it was a grewat hive, my very best in building comb, and surviving the severe drought. BUTTTTT, they were hot. They would get me through my bee...

    Re: Bees and Urine

I wondered about "SALT". I have blocks of salt out for the animals. The bees do not go to my goat's or rabbit's urine, but I do not see them on the salt blocks either. I also assumed the poster had...

    Re: Bees and Urine

I have not seen this phenomenon, we have rabbits and goats among other species. The previous writer may be correct. Here is an old thread

    Re: Chickens

I have about 40 chickens and 4 hives. They are about 150 feet apart, because I also keep goats and sheep, near the chickens. No problems with the chickens and bees. The chickens do not seem to eat my...

    Re: Texas beekeeping, Texas bees

To those who have caught swarms in Texas: several questions.

What do you use to lure swarms
    Do you requeen
Are the feral bees reasonable to manage

    Re: Texas beekeeping, Texas bees

In south Texas, I had a terrible summer. Too much heat, could not keep ants out, and no pollen. My bees are happy now, it has been mostly warm and has rained some.

I read you have swarm traps...
  18. Re: Hive made their own queen, very productive but very defensive, should I replace

Went out to ceck on the bees today. It was 68 degrees in the lare afternoon, so I thought they would be flying. Checking to see if they are still thriving and how many winter stores they have. They...
  19. Re: Hive made their own queen, very productive but very defensive, should I replace

    Thanks for the replies:

This hive has been boiling up out of the box for months. I could not use a smoker this summer due to fire risk, (I have already had plenty of folks fuss at me about that,...

  21. Re: Hive made their own queen, very productive but very defensive, should I replace

Thanks for the input: Here are some other details.

    1) Have seen the new queen, clearly not the marked one from the package.

    2) This hive has been boiling up out of its home for months, and I...
  22. Hive made their own queen, very productive but very defensive, should I replace

One hive has been my best. From a package, they built foundation quickly, built up numbers quickly. They survived no rain for 100+ days in South Texas, temps over 110 at times. Lost most of the other...
  23. Leave screened bottom board or close it up for the winter??

I am in South Texas, we have now had two or three freezing nights. Still getting up into the 60's during the day. Should I replace the screened bottom boards, to help the hive retain heat, or leave...

    Should I split the hive???

Here is south Texas it has been an awful summer for anything growing. We have about 1.15 inches of rain all summer. 1 inch in June, 0.15 in July and none in August. Temps hit 110 at our ranch on four...

Re: My syrup turned rock hard

Water boils at 212 but adding solids will increase the boiling point as it also lowers the freezing point. (Which is why they "salt" the roads in winter). You guys may be talking about the same thing...
