Re: How many plant bee plants

i must begin by stating that this is my first spring keeping bees, but so far all of mine go elsewhere to forage, despite abundant white clover, privet blossom, all kinds of wild and domestic...
  3. Re: new beekeeper, new hive from nuc. queen cells. worried... what to do now?

i just now took a quick look into the top box, then removed it and looked into the bottom box, without removing any frames.

the bees do not appear to have swarmed, as there seem to my eyes to...

    Re: Interesting Orientation Flight Observation

mine were doing it at 4pm every day, but then we had a really hot week around memorial weekend, and they moved it to later, around 6pm. it's a lot cooler now, i'll see what they do today.
  5. Re: new beekeeper, new hive from nuc. queen cells. worried... what to do now?

thanks jeff. in four inspections i have not seen the queen, but to be honest, i have not tried real hard to find her because i am always so nervous about keeping the hive open for more than a few...
  6. Re: new beekeeper, new hive from nuc. queen cells. worried... what to do now?

thanks peter and chuck for your advice.

peter: the queen cells are at the bottom of the frame, and i have read that this indicates swarm cells. i thought supersedure cells were on the sides of...

    howdy all,

i installed my 5-frame nuc about four weeks ago, into an 8-frame medium box. i added three foundationless frames at the outer ends. to make 8 frames total.

    Re: Orientation Flights or Robbing?

well this saves me asking the same question. i've had my bees about three weeks now and every day at 4pm they do this. the first time i saw it i thought it was the hive getting rowdy because...

Re: new beekeeper, new nuc, first inspection

thanks laurie, and everybody else who replied.

i did another inspection today and the foundationless frames are being drawn out pretty nice, among the frmaes that came with the nuc.

    this was...
  11. can a hive of small-cell bees be "un-regressed" over time?

    howdy all,

    another newbie question:

i have a hive of small-cell bees that i started with a nuc from wolf creek bees. so i was thinking today, if my queen ever died or got superseded, and...

busy hive, but no bees in my flowers

    howdy all,

i have a bee behavior question. i have a new hive, and all day i can see lots of foragers coming and going, with lots of pollen being brought in.

but none of my bees are...
  13. Re: new beekeeper, new nuc: to feed or not to feed? also frame placement question

hey daniel, thanks for your detailed and thorough reply. i just went out and interspersed the frames, but i did not feed. we'll see in a week when i open up the hive again, how well...

Re: new beekeeper, new nuc, first inspection

ok guys, i did NOT feed, but i did intersperse the foundationless frames among the already-built-up frames from the nuc. the colony seems to be thriving, and there's a lot of foraging going on...

Re: new beekeeper, new nuc, first inspection

yikes! i'm gonna feel like a marauder :) but i will bite the bullet and do it. i just read in michael bush's book that letting errant comb go un-corrected will haunt one forever.

Re: new beekeeper, new nuc, first inspection

thank you beeman410, but how best to accomplish this? should i just run the straight edge of the hive tool down between the frames and sever the burr comb that way? it seems as if it would be...

    drifting vs guard bees

ok here's a newbie question for you all: how can you have drifting if each hive has its own guard bees? i thought the guards will keep out any bees from another hive.

    thanks,
