    Re: Crimson clover

I've planted areas about 5x10 and see light honey bee traffic on it early in the season. More bumble bees than honey bees. I fall sow and it blooms in the spring.

    Re: Preparing for Next Year

There is a lot of Russian sage in our area. It blooms for quite a while in late summer into fall. While I wouldn't say the bees hit it hard all the time, there usually are some bees on each plant...

    Re: Holy Cow they're thirsty!

Printerman if you leave the super on over winter it will provide food for spring, but you'll also run the risk of getting eggs laid there early next year. Dirty comb. Assuming the comb is drawn in...

Re: Denver area honey color in 2014

Light colored in NE Boulder too. There was lots of sweet yellow clover around, more than last year. Linden was good too. Bees are out now but no major flow, lots of flowers in neighbors yards.

    Re: Colorado native bee identification

Bumble bees, I don't know the variety. We have the same stripe pattern in Boulder(near Niwot) these small ones are the workers. earlier in the season we had larger ones, queens I'm guessing, working...
  7. Re: Planting 1 1/2 acres of Yellow Sweet clover. Cost approx 150.00. Is it worth it

It's a biannual so no flowers until the second year. It's Good for honey, I heard an old beekeeper in colorado say that there are no bad beekeepers in years that the sweet yellow clover blooms.

    Re: Hello from Colorado Springs

    Hello Blue,
What's blooming in the the Springs? We have golden rain trees up here. I think it's the last tree flowering tree we'll see. Lots of garden flowers still going strong.

  10. Re: Day 50: My TBH box is 90% full... I don't know what to do.

I split both of my top bar hives this year, into langs. I screwed a couple of drywall screws into the end of my 18" bars so the screw heads rest on the lang's frame rest. Those hives are doing good,...

Re: yellow jackets and low egg numbers?

I use the big box store traps with the pheromone lures but I've seen videos on u-tube where you can make your own traps using soda bottles and fermented juice or wine.

Re: yellow jackets and low egg numbers?

I have a neighbor whose 2 hives were robbed out last fall. The yellow jackets will fly at lower temps than the bees and attack when the bees are confined due to low temps. I know this is months away....

I've never seen too aggressive fighting, unless like stated above, it's with wasps. Not sure how big the pond and raft is/are but maybe adding a second raft and some visual barrier between them to...

    Re: Honey press

Don you could pull out the good parts, assuming lots of capped honey is intact. Then let your hives attack the rest picking it clean.
