    Re: Hello from pacific northwest.

    You're in good company - there are plenty of beeks in the Metro, (and I would assume also in Vacouver) and plenty of resources to draw on.

    Re: No more white hives for me

    There's no excuse for boring hives; mine's in my backyard so I painted it a color I liked to look at. The girls certainly don't care.

    Re: 9 year old newbee

    The 2y/o will get zapped once by the fence and then he'll learn (just like I did - got nailed once). As for her... get a hive with an observation window (also what I did) so everyone can indulge...

    Re: 9 year old newbee

    Ok, I've gotta chime it too:

    I have a top-bar in my backyard. The fences provide good wind shelter, I don't worry about the local wildlife - but if I had bears I would just use electric fences,...

    Re: Bee's in a barn

    If the host hive is strong enough to swarm it's very likely you'll catch one from them. Have your bait hive in place and not too close to the barn;
    be cooler to do a cut out though and get the...

    I snagged that one from the library; I don't know if I'd call it a beginner's book, but it was an excellent read.

    Re: And another question...

    It's not impossible, just unlikely. The first year they will be building out and setting honey for winter - the surplus honey that keepers harvest is available when the hive isn't working to build...

    Re: Why's of Top Bar Hives

    Eh, you made the best of a less then ideal situation. I'd expect that if they were going to ball her they'd have done so as soon as they noticed her.
  25. Re: Honey from different flowers has a different taste?

    Howabout that? pretty cool. I don't ever remember seeing bees when I was in Iraq, (saw plenty of other critters! lol) but never bees, so this certainly can't be a bad thing.
