Re: My recipe/method for sugar blocks

The heat can turn the sugar into something that can kill the bees I believe.
  2. Re: Which length is best for a Top Bar Hive? 3 or 4 feet?

I would say 5 foot would be better than 4 for a Crowder hive, my first year packages were only fed for a couple weeks lightly and they filled them nearly 3/4 of the way. At that length it might get...
  3. Re: Which length is best for a Top Bar Hive? 3 or 4 feet?

    4 feet or 5 feet.

The bigger the combs the harder they will be to keep straight and easier to break off. Mine are Les Crowder's footprint 4 footers. Combs are shallow and easy to keep straight.

Re: Ontario restricts use of neonicotinoids

What's the government going to do if the bees don't comply? Arrest them and throw them in jail?

Bravo Ontario, really? Legislating a mortality rate isn't waving a magic wand. They should also...

For all of the seemingly "random" things that bees may dispatch the queen because of... it's a miracle they don't off her ten seconds after the swarm settles two feet in front of the hive. Can you...

Re: Benefits of Queen Wing Clipping?

Interesting, she and the workers don't look any darker than our Carniolans. The bees in the picture aren't Carni, but the queen is...

Re: Les Crowder - Topbar Beekeeping

I thought the pictures/section on comb movement/management were worth the price. The truth is that there isn't much difference in beekeeping based on what hive you use. To me the biggest thing...

No, it's a trick question. One room is in Alaska in February the other is in Arizona in August.

Re: Empty Gallon Lined Paint Cans

That's for a quart. The gallon size (like OP) are between $6 and $7 at HD. I bought several there this year for fall feeding. Just ran them through the dishwasher to put them up for the winter.

Re: General Questions Before I Get Started

We have bees at my brother's house. He has a son slightly younger than my daughter (both near 2 years old). We are all out in the yard all of the time, no issues. Oriented the hives so the flight...

Re: Wrapping hives in cold climates.........

I don't think anyone is arguing that black hives lose no heat, are they? If even a white box warms than your statement would be the same... it would just burst into flames a little later than the...

Re: Temps inside the hive !!

I put 1/2" hardware cloth in a couple of our top bar entrances a few days ago on a 10 degree morning. No wind, but when I had my hand over the entrance it felt like there was something blowing warm...

Re: Should a new beek start with langs?

One thing that came to mind that I didn't post in my original reply is how much easier I find inspecting a TBH vs. a Lang. Part of that is I just need to learn how to be a bit more efficient at...

We're cold for quite awhile. I doubt we'll be warm enough to open them within the next week. Nothing I can do now, just seems odd.

Re: Should a new beek start with langs?

I started this year with TBHs, captured swarms to the point where we needed more space so we bought some Langs.

It might come down to what kind of beekeeper you're going to be. If you just want...
