Re: Why do Male Drones Bees Die after mating mating

Very similar to why female bees die after they sting.
One has the venom sac remaining, the other has the sperm sac remaining in the victim.

Re: How's the flow going for you?

Our spring flow is over, we are already picking cherries.
Low yields about 30# per hive.

Re: Swarm commander: Does It Really Work?

The bees wouldn't have cost me anything because I haven't had to buy bees in years.
My swarm trapping success is up from last year, & the year before. Unfortunately I have no way of knowing if the...

Re: Swarm commander: Does It Really Work?

    Maybe Camp fire starter logs?
  12. Re: One comb in your ten frame swarm trap - where do you place it.

When I put the drawn combs in the center the rest of the box is full of frames, no open space.

Re: Hives in the shade or full sun

My shaded swarm traps catch more swarms than my sunny ones.
But the beetles, & varroa like the shade better also. Moisture can build up more in the hive in the shade also.

Re: How do you keep yourselves out of the hives?

You need at least 3 hives, so you can go in one every week without over working them.
  17. Re: One comb in your ten frame swarm trap - where do you place it.

    Middle, every time.
It just seemed to me that the queen could lay immediately, & the cluster could surround it to keep it warm.

Re: over 30 days and no eggs yet

You might have to add a frame of eggs every week for several weeks before a queen cell is built. It can be done but most people don't consider it worth the effort or resources.

Re: Hives in the shade or full sun

I like afternoon shade, or full sun

On the 2 questions I would say both. bees don't forage on warm nights, nor do they forage on cold sunny days. below 40F

If you're trying to get foundation drawn in you're brood boxes, I wouldn't stop until its almost done, or they stop taking it.

Poll: Re: Packaged bees left their queen

Beekeeper down the road from me lost 5 out of 7 this year. They left shortly after the queen was released & started laying.

    Re: First swarm trap success?

Nice, I let them sit a couple weeks before I open them.
That way if they had a virgin queen, she should have time to mate before I start messing with them.
