    Re: Honey Prices For 2012!

I priced mine at $6 per pound (12 fluid ounce glass jar) and sold the few jars I had available within an hour. But I gave away 3x what I sold so obviously not in it for the money.

Re: Salvaging weak hive worth it?

The 2 deeps have quite a few bees, these were taken at 1PM while the foragers are out. 2811 2812

But the center frames of the brood box are very sparse. Some frames have larger patches of...

Re: Salvaging weak hive worth it?

That makes sense. I guess I am thinking my two options are grab all the honey and let them perish - replace with another swarm next spring. Or, put effort into saving them and they may survive...

Re: Salvaging weak hive worth it?

I would say no. The brood pattern is very sparse. I'll take a look later this morning and gets some photos.

    Salvaging weak hive worth it?

I am a beginning beekpeper with 2 hives. I recently removed all honey supers and left both hives with 2 deeps to prepare for winter. The one started earlier from a nuc is booming, bursting at the...

    Re: Overwintering and feeding

The person who advised removing the supers mentioned the bees would be cutoff from the honey in the supers. From that I gathered the bees would be moving lower in the 2 brood boxes and be unwilling...

    Re: Overwintering and feeding

So is the idea to remove the supers and the bees will then focus on backfilling the brood nest rather than filling the supers?

    Overwintering and feeding

I have a question on overwintering and feeding the bees in Pacific Northwest environment. My preference is to keep them fed with their own honey rather than sugar water. I have read that a hive...

    Re: Drone frame question

#2, I've been told 2-3 frames from the outside on a 10 frame setup.
  12. Re: going to try NITRILE EXAM GLOVES for hive inspections

I've tried the Nitrile Exam gloves but can't keep the bees still enough to perform the exam.

Just kidding. I have used them to kep the propolis off and they work great. No chance to see how they...
  13. Re: Shallow super with thin surplus need wires?

Thanks beedeetee and strikestrip. I understand it is desirable to have the foundation thin for the comb honey, maybe it works better earlier in the year rather than the heat of summer.

    I'll see...
  14. Shallow super with thin surplus need wires?

Does a shallow super with thin surplus foundation need wires? I put a set of 10 frames on Saturday, checked in this morning and most of the foundation had sagged a bit and the one in the middle had...
  15. Re: Un-capped immature pupas - What's wrong??

    Dead ones being removed?

I have a drone frame in the freezer now. I imagine when I put it back in the hive, the dead pupae will be uncapped and removed.

  17. Re: Any plants whose blooms produce bad tasting honey?

So it sounds like honey in the hive can run the gamut of flavors and maybe even make you high or kill you. How do people manage getting good honey only? Know what is blooming when?
  18. Any plants whose blooms produce bad tasting honey?

Are there any plants whose blooms produce bad tasting honey?

  20. Re: What do dead mites look like on a bottom board/tray?

To me they look like little horseshoe crabs without the long tail. No idea if they have blue blood though.

    Re: Collecting Swarm

On the sawrm I caught, there were quite a few bees left on the branch due to the thickness of the branch and twigs on it. The homeowner asked me, like I am some kind of expert , what...

    Adding supers

Is it best to add new supers with undrawn foundation below existing supers, just above the brood box, or on top of all existing supers?

Is there benefit to baiting them into the new box,...
  23. Re: Robbing video, please review and suggest.

Are their stingers gone? I was guessing the metal was very hot and they expired upon landing there. I have not seen that before either (but I am a newbee).
  24. Re: Robbing video, please review and suggest.

Looks like my hives every day around 4-5PM.
