  1. Re: Checkerboarded... now reversed medium and deep for pollen box

    Thanks Walt,
Well, its not the first time I jumped the gun....Should I move it right back like it was? The deep was empty of brood...some pollen. I thought by moving the queen and brood down below...
  2. Checkerboarded... now reversed medium and deep for pollen box

I finally had enough honey comb and drawn empty comb to checkerboard this year...the Carniolans left plenty of stores.
I did a full inspection just now and found the queen and 4 frames with sealed...

    Re: Put up wet....

Yes, the frames were 40% older pollen with the rest empty. The pollen does have some whitish mold(?) covering some of them...with a few frames having mold(?) bluish tint....

Re: How to remove the evil twin in double deeps

No. I blame me for not understanding the different races of bees and how they fit in my area. I also blame my inattention to details. I saw a quote that said Experience is a stern teacher...you get...

I am trying my first checkerboarding this year and am trying to get rid of the double deep I have. I was able to checkerboard the medium I have above the double deeps, it was capped honey all the way...

    Re: Switching boxes

If I wanted to get rid of the bottom deep that is mainly empty with some pollen, in addition to adding a medium (or shallow) at the bottom for a pollen reserve super, would I move the medium just...

    will bees swarm during dearth?

We are in a dearth here in central Virginia and I have a big hive of Carnis that I am a little worried will swarm. I tried to check their hive last weekend but they didn't like me taking their hive...
  10. Re: Introducting a Queen Cell - Do you have to wait?

I found the queen cell torn open near the top with the queen still in there, in a queenright colony. Does that indicate the queen got to the new one first....or the beekeeper (me!) did it? Maybe the...

    Pollen availability in Central Virginia?

    Hi all,
Could any of the more experienced beeks in central Virginia tell me how long one can expect the girls to be collecting pollen? I noticed quite a bit coming in earlier this spring and just...

I have been getting wiffs of something flowering the past few days, but couldn't pinpoint it. Today I went in search of it. It turns out it was six bushes I put in for a wind break. They are...

    Queen cells....swarm or supercede???

I just inspected the bigger of my two hives and I found three what I think are capped queen cells. This hive has alot of bees, alot of brood capped and not, some honey and pollen. I had a medium...
  14. Re: Is it too late to start an observation hive?

The observation hive is six medium frames (double three high). What exactly is a split without a queen? Wouldn't taking a couple frames be without the queen? (and hoping they can raise a queen from...
  15. Is it too late to start an observation hive?

I have been building an observation hive and like so many things it has been a slow go....but I'm close now and was wondering if I should wait for Spring to start it or can I try and populate it now....

    Re: observation hives

    Hi Michael.
    Is 1 3/4" between the glass using a 1 1/4" frame or standard 1 3/8"?
Is it harder to overwinter a single frame width?
Is there more time spent manipulating frames, etc. to keep the...

    observation hives

Has anyone had experience with observation hives? Single frame widths would insure seeing the queen, but I've read where two frame widths helps in the winter for brood cluster. Minimum number of...

  23. Swarm catch update...robbing stopped and larvae observed!

  24. Re: To look or not...dearth on, but maybe swarm sign....what to do?

  25. Re: Huge orientation, swarm or robbing - any other options?
