X3million on the camelback. Also you can buy cooling vests that have ice pack inserts. Haven't had to use either beekeeping but I used to work at an oil refinery in Texas. A nomex (fire retardant)...

    Consolidate or wait?

I currently have 1 hive and a nuc from a mid July swarm. I'd like advice on best way to end up with two live colonies come spring. The thistle flow is tailing off and golden rod just starting to...
  4. Re: Checking hives in late evening made the girls mad

Has anyone tried working their bees around dawn? I know it sounds weird but with the shifts I'm pulling the only time I have is in the morning. I would just want to change out baggie feeder and jar...

Re: Drastic times call for drastic measures.

Translation please? I haven't run across the FGMO acronym before. I am interesting in staying on the softer treatment end. I did my second sugar dusting yesterday.
  8. Re: Managing bee yard for co-worker, what would you ask for in return?

Re: Sugar water instead of a smoker?

I tried it because a smoker was extra money, I already had the incense. We always end up with 1" long nubs of sticks from using them in the house.

Re: Sugar water instead of a smoker?

I've been using a stick of incense (fairly neutral cinammon smell) instead of a smoker. It works pretty good for me. I can stick it into the entry way or top cover hole to get the bees to move so I...
  12. Re: Inspection Questions- Did I do right thing?

All I saw on Sunday was capped brood ,. 4 frames with mostly worker with some drone. I had 10 frames with solid pollen and about 2 inch strip on top of capped honey.

There is a minor thistle flow...
  13. Re: Inspection Questions- Did I do right thing?

Yes, I meant sugar dusting. I used 1.5 cups of powdered sugar for the 3 medium boxes. I pulled the sticky board today after ~24hrs and counted 31 mites.

Based on what I've read under 50 mites/day...
  14. Inspection Questions- Did I do right thing?

Could you install a roofed chainlink dog run at the site to surround the hives? That would prevent tipping and rocks. They could still use wasp spray though...

    Re: Swarms around urban areas?

Christy, good job on your first inspection!
If the frames are a mess you may want to study "cut out" videos. They show how to fit wild comb into frames with rubber bands like Mr.Beeman mentioned....
