    Re: Queen Caging Tips

Thanks, David LaFerney, for asking the hard questions. I'm right there with you, and like others, I've taken stings and really don't swell up or itch afterwards any longer, but there's something...

Re: Going to give grafting a go tomorrow...

Set up a well ventilated 5-frame starter/finisher (actually, a swarm moved into it 4 weeks ago, so I moved out the queen and added more nurse bees) 2 days ago and decided to try grafting with larvae...

    Re: Queen envy

I got tired of having constant Queen Envy looking at all of Lauri's queens, so I decided to purchase a couple of her 2015 "pick of the litter" breeder queens. These are queens she would have pulled...

    Re: swarm-catching bucket

Sounds like I built mine just like Mr. Beeman's. Here's a link to one of the swarms I caught with it.

    Re: First Swarm Capture :)

I agree with Mr. Beeman 100%...a swarm on the ground will (usually!) walk right into a box. I've used that trick a couple of times. Swarm season is just starting in the SLC area and I've got my...

    Re: New spring traps

Travis-b -- I'm retiring some older frames to bait hives, and they do have a bit of honey/pollen in them. I've loaded my traps and placed them near my hives letting the bees clean them up, as you...

Re: Swarm commander: Does It Really Work?

Great point, Charlie! I've made up some 5-frame nucs over the winter and will use those stacked two high. All my other traps have the LGO melted into old wax just inside the entrances.

Re: Swarm commander: Does It Really Work?

OK - I'm in. We've got a guy who's won our bait hive challenge here in Utah for the last couple of years and it would be nice to be able to give him a little competition. I'm looking forward to...

Re: when to know they have moved in

Just a heads up to those trapping for the first time...If you have any pollen, nectar or honey left on/in the frames that you put in your trap you can expect that bees will rob from your box until it...

    Re: Migratory covers

If you are big enough to buy truckload quantities, a broker that I worked for over 25 yrs ago is Matheus Lumber out of Woodinville, WA (matheuslumber.com). We always got the 'heads up' on seconds and...

Re: Seeing drones in S E Texas

I was looking at the sticky at the top of this forum regarding Post Your Swarm Dates, and the very last post on there said, "Going to get a basketball size swarm today in Port Lavaca, Texas. It has...

    Re: Mann Lake 5-frame nucs

I like the extra width because it fits an internal feeder and 4 frames nicely. Before getting them I had made up a few of my own nucs, and they are so tight with a feeder that it takes everything...
  13. Re: Newbie wanting to acquire my bees by swarm trap

CJ - If you don't have to extend the pole too far, you could put a medium on there, but that weight PLUS the weight of the bees may reach a tipping point. I've had a couple of swarms where I was 3/4...
  14. Re: Newbie wanting to acquire my bees by swarm trap

Kim - I did make the swarm pole. It's very easy! The page titled Honey Bee Swarm Catcher Pole on my blog gives you an idea on how to make it. I got the idea from other youtubers who posted it well...
  15. Re: Newbie wanting to acquire my bees by swarm trap

Another option is to figure out how to get on local swarm call lists. I've only caught one swarm in a swarm trap over the last three years, but have averaged 12+ manual swarm captures (out of trees,...

    Re: Accidental Beehive

I would agree with green2btree to use the rigid foam insulation. If you relocate into a nuc, they won't be able to draw new comb or re-attach removed comb. I think you've done what you can for them....
  17. Re: Bees hanging out on neighbors porch--what to do ?

If you have it available to you, a small nuc with some drawn comb sat beside the plastic box (as high as the bees are off the ground, and right next to the plastic box) may be enough to entice them...

Re: INSTALLING HONEY GATE ON 5 GALLON BUCKET

I just ordered 10 off eBay. We've got 4 beekeepers here where I work...we'll give them a try. Thanks for the info!!
  20. Re: Removing queen cells from plastic foundation.

I've done what RayMarler is doing with the hive tool. I was advised by somebody to just go very slowly, which helped pick up my success rate of getting them off the plastic in one piece. This was...

    Re: Jealous new swarmer

Our area has several bee clubs that each have their own FB page. Quite often swarm calls are placed on those pages by other beekeepers who get a call, but can't get to it, and they are generally...
  23. Caught my fourth swarm out of the same tree in a week...
