    Re: Queenless in March

Should I combine the hives and plan on a division in a couple of months?

    Queenless in March

I have two hives, one that's just made it through its second winter. Last week I inspected it and found no queen, no brood, and no eggs. I saw a queen cell about half its completed size.
    I...

    Queen with bad wings, virgin?

I split my hives earlier this summer, and I knew I had queen cells in the strong hive. Today's inspection revealed no eggs (in any frame) and a queen with shredded wings. I'm assuming she's a...

    Newbee questions

    1. My bees are storing honey and pollen in their bottom box; new eggs and brood are in the top box. I have a honey super on, but so far no action. Almost all the comb is drawn out in the bottom...
  5. Re: good location, bad timing, rotten swarm luck.

I know we're not nuts....but one neighbor has a gated gravel driveway. Think about that for a second. We're not talking livestock gate, we're talking wrought-iron, paranoid of the big, bad, world...
  6. Re: good location, bad timing, rotten swarm luck.

I made the mesh cone with a flap of screen at the end and stapled that around the hole in the tree. I put a weak colony there (currently queenless, but with supercedure cells). I think there's...
  7. Re: good location, bad timing, rotten swarm luck.

The bee vac didn't work; they're too deep in the hollow. I'll try a trap out. I have the stuff to make the cone and I have a weak colony that could use buffering up!
  8. Re: good location, bad timing, rotten swarm luck.

How far away from the parent hive is a good location for a lure? There are several big old apple trees in the same field. All, unfortunately, have loads of cracks and crevices that bees would...
  9. good location, bad timing, rotten swarm luck.

I set out an empty medium hoping to lure in a swarm. I baited it with honey and LGO.
Today I asked husband to walk with me to see if there was action. As we approached, he declared "the box is...

    Re: moving frames around

That's a rather ominous assumption. We don't have SHB in my part of Oregon.

I have the extra brood box on, and they've already started drawing out six frames worth of foundation.

    Our major...

    Re: moving frames around

beedeetee, thanks for the dates. I'm just starting to see blackberry buds open around here. We're also close to a field of clover, but I don't think that's irrigated. We have a ton of clover in...

    Re: moving frames around

I have probably six frames of sealed brood. I'll check them next week and see what we need to do.

I was told that I'd need to let them build comb and raise one generation of brood before putting...

    Re: moving frames around

I traded two frames of open brood and eggs into the top super. We're about to hit the blackberry flow here; they seem to be building foundation like gangbusters.

Dare I hope for a honey harvest...

Re: Why not to go barefoot

My thought for my first sting was not "hmm, what was that?" the language that nearly came out was a wee bit stronger than that.

I love going barefoot, but my tender feet don't like the gravel...

Re: Why not to go barefoot

I got my first sting yesterday, too. Only it's on the web between my thumb and forefinger. It hurts because it's a place that I use a lot!

    Re: changing entrance

I did close the bottom at night, and I don't have a landing board. Oh well. It's not super important, but it's definitely a goal.

    moving frames around

I've added a second deep (10 frames) to my hive. The girls are doing really well, I have lots of eggs and capped brood. They've drawn all but one frame in the first box. Today I found my queen for...

    changing entrance

So I made a makeshift screened bottom board to monitor for mites. I'd like to change the entrance to the top. How do I do that? I tried blocking the bottom entrance, but that led to many confused...
  20. Re: assembling frames (nailing- scared to split wood)

When I put mine together, I used a brad pusher and a rubber mallet. I didn't split anything because the frame wood was really soft.

hmmm. foot pain post op for a neuroma

I had surgery to remove a Morton's neuroma two years ago. Every time I fly, my foot swells and the site of the surgery is painful during activity (running, dance, etc.)
    It's slowly gotten better...

    Re: Raising chicks

For pest control, try to find some diatomaceous earth. Food Grade fossil flour makes awesome dust baths, and you can feed it to the birds as a wormer. It's not a chemical, but it's awesome. We...

    Re: Raising chicks

You can elevate the hardware cloth floor and use newspaper underneath that indefinitely. It's cheaper than shavings. That's what we did with our batch of 50 from last summer.

    Leghorns are...
  25. Re: Hived swarm: queen and super questions

They're taking about a quart (sometimes more, sometimes less) per day. It seems to be a small amount of bees (but this is my first-ever hive!). They're covering about four frames when I inspect. ...
