Re: Help. Queen cells torn down.

Did you check for queen cells?

Re: How did my bees survive ! ?

I think brood would be much better than just drawn. With just drawn comb it will still be nearly 3 1\2 weeks before any new bees emerge. I would suggest giving them a frame of emerging brood, so you...

Re: How did my bees survive ! ?

The queen stops raising brood in the late fall, and will begin laying again about Mid to late January. Right now in my area, Silver Maples, Daffodils and Crocus have been in bloom. Purple deadnettles...
  4. Re: Selection criteria for queen colonies and drone colonies

I am setting up 100 mating nucs, and using all of them each round. I am kind of following Larry Connor's article, since there's not much info out there on DHC's, but I don't think I'll need to rotate...

Re: Making your own drone comb for DHCs

Do you move your drone brood to queen less/virgin hives? Also, what management issues would you have with some worker comb on it?
  6. Re: Selection criteria for queen colonies and drone colonies

I have the opportunity to put a drone holding yard about 1/2mi to 3/4mi away from my mating yard. Do you think this will work okay? I also think there are exceptions to mating flight distance, but I...

Re: Making your own drone comb for DHCs

I am doing some experimenting. I decided to buy some wax drone foundation from Mann Lake, cut them into starter strips(to get more out of it). I stuck them into both deep and medium frames, and...

    Re: What bee suits you?

My local mutts do just fine for me.

Maybe I haven't been involved as long as you, but she always responds to my emails within a day, speaks at bee club meetings, and makes frequent reports.

Do they make good smoker fuel? Haha.

There's a lot to his "methods" that don't make sense.

    Re: Another Overwinter Nuc question...

If it's early enough in the season, you can break them back down to 2 frames of brood, 1 frame of honey, and 1 empty. The trick is knowing your local seasons and experimenting.

Re: Apimondia USA Bid for 2019

I forgot to mention in the OP, but the American Beekeeping Federation has voted to match the donations up to $20,000!

Also, make sure you check out the Facebook page if you're on,...

    Re: Spring feeding Dilemma

I think you're too cold to feed syrup. I would wait until temps are consistently 50+. I would think you're okay to feed pollen sub, as they are probably brooding up, it looks like you'll have temps...

  17. Re: Conventional Beekeepers Bashing on Treatment Free Beekeepers

If you requeen them, I think that would be considered breeding for treatment free beekeeping.

Edit: I think you meant abnormal or high mite loads?
  18. Re: Conventional Beekeepers Bashing on Treatment Free Beekeepers

Isn't the 6% mite infestation the mainstream imminent threat clue?

Re: Torn-Down QC's In Mating Nucs

Last year I gave 14 day old cells(45) the same day, several hours after making up the nucs, and have come back the next day to find them starting queen cells. They didn't get very far before they...

    Re: Palmer Double Nuc

Had to use queen cells to start my nucs last year, had no mating nucs. I think I made them up in June. With the cells, they just didn't take off like what I saw in Vermont with mated queens. Mating...

    Apimondia USA Bid for 2019

There is a team of people who are attempting to make a bid for hosting Apimondia 2019 in Minneapolis, MN, USA. Every third Apimondia is hosted in a country outside of Europe, and it has been around...
  22. Re: What would you do with clusters at top of hives?

I would leave it be, and continue to add sugar. When there is pollen coming in and its warm enough to feed sugar syrup, or there is nectar coming in, I would reverse broodnest(if you are using...

Re: How would you have responded?

I've dealt with shaking 25# of bees into big screened boxes. I don't think you'd want any more than that. If you knock the cluster off the top of the box into a pile of bees on the bottom they can...

Re: So Far So Good this Winter

Mine went in with smaller clusters than I like, but the ones I've been able to tap on are still alive. I put on pollen patties a couple weeks ago, so maybe they'll get to make use out of them next...
