I clean with cold water. then dry the inside and out before putting it away. I don't take the motor or basket off.
You can check them as often as you like. During peak swarm season here ( May 15-July 4) I check them at least twice a week.
Treated 15 hives in Aug. three lost queens before winter set in. All remaining hives alive but we still have some winter here.
Most natural food/herbal stores should have it. You shouldn't have any trouble finding some. Remember a little goes a long way. Only use a few drops at a time.
I use 5 frame boxes with a 1 inch hole toward the bottom on one end. I put 2 frames of drawn comb and 3 empty frames in with a few drops of lemongrass oil. Put them up 10-15 feet if possible. I like...
I have never had much luck getting any amount of wax from old brood combs. I have tried the hot water method and that made sludge. Even wrapped in old cloth. The solar melter didn't work either. The...
I have looked in the vege/flower catalogs for packets of cotton seeds but haven't found any. Any ideas where to look? Are there any varieties that will grow in Upstate NY. I only wanted to plant a...
I will jump into the hotseat and offer, Information and advice concerning the keeping of bees and the production of hive products using the honeybees inate biological charactoristics while limiting...
I have extracted foundationless frames with a 2 frame extractor. If you are careful it can be done. The most fragile is new comb. Older comb especially if it is wired should be OK. You still need to...
Our course is very similar. We help students order equipment and have a night where we put stuff together(frames and foundation, and boxes) demonstrate smokers, hive tools and veils and jackets. The...
I use 8oz, 16oz, and 32oz. I sell more 8oz than 16oz. It's nice to have options but don't make it confusing. People will buy what you have available.
Yes,I agree that this is a good example of fermentation. Did you check the moisture content when you extracted? Did you extract some frames that were not fully capped? The moisture should be less...
One of the first pollens here is skunk cabbage. Our soft maples started 3-4 days ago.
Elkridge, Thats a high price. I haven't bought LGO in awhile but I think you can get it much cheaper than that. Look around online. Just putting the drops on the frames works fine for me.

I would put them where it's convenient for you. Jeffzhear is right about the height, about 10-15 feet. I try to use deer hunting stands when I can, although I have had them as low as 5 feet and still...
A 5-frame nuc works fine. I catch 10-12 swarms every year with them.
My bee club has been asked to setup and maintain an OH at our cooperative extension building. Can an OH be self sustaining with supplemental feeding? How many frames should it be? What diameter and...
I have used the standard leather beekeeping gloves and didn't like the loss of dexterity. They crushed bees. Then I used the non-latex exam gloves and they worked well but the bees can sting through...
I'm also having a little trouble understanding. Most of you feed sugar syrup but dry sugar causes problems? It would seem the syrup could have more potential for contamination due to the higher...
I have had good luck with Beeline in Bedford PA. I don't know what their bulk rates are. Phone 814 585-4699
Nice pictures. Thanks for posting. Minus 8F here this am
I do it just as you suggested, foundationless brood boxes and crimpwired foundation in the supers. Works well for me and the bees seem to like it. I have no worries with extracting.
I stop at construction sites and ask if I can have scrap wood from the dumpster. I get lots of plywood, 2x6s 2x8s 2x4s. Sometimes they will even stack it for me if they know when I'm coming. I don't...
