    Re: Major SHB problem

I don't think that if matters what you have under your hives for SHB control. By the time you have larvae coming out to burrow in the soil under your hive you normally don't have much left to save....

    Re: Removing a baby skunk

If you can't pop a cap in a pest, you need to move. Fold a tarp over a baited havahart trap, it'll look like a nice safe den. When trapped, just pick it up and release somewhere, or give swimming...

    Re: Honey (Queen) Excluder

I use QEs, but with top entrances. If the QE is a "honey excluder" then it gets dumped in the supers, not the brood boxes.
  4. Re: VSH behavior against small hive beatle?

I've requeened with VSH the last year or so and my SHB is definately better. But that's not the only variable thats changed, so I can't say anything definate. I do know when a SHB comes out of a...

    Re: Major SHB problem

Stop giving them a place to hide. Light will push them down. I like solid bottom boards for SHB. Take the supers off one at the time slowly, letting light push the SHB down, bump the bottom box...

Re: mosquito fogger killing honey bees

Since you informed them you had bees, asked them to let you know, and they didn't, I'd go by and ask someone in management "nicely" how are they going to make it right. You have a rep on city or ...

x2 on the treadmill motor. lots of speed adjustment. No sprockets, most have a fan belt, you mount a small fan belt pulley on top of the extractor shaft and motor mounts over to side out of the way....

    Re: Nitril gloves

I get the hospital grade ones from work. The bees don't seem to mind if they are tan, blue, or purple. Thin ones tear after a hives worth of work. A good pair may last me 12 or more hives and get...

    Re: bug spray

X2 Permathrin spray will last on your boot/clothes 2 weeks. It will kill whatever insect hits the treated fabric, so I'd keep it low.
I normally just deep woods off from the knee down, and have put...

    Re: Full suit or jacket.

Jacket, I'd leave the full suit unless you do a lot of cutouts or lived in an AHB area. I personally stay away from natural fibers, such as cotton. They soak up sweat, mildew in my high humidity area...
  12. Re: Are carpenter ants a nuisance or big trouble?

They will overrun a weak hive or nuc and the bees will abscond. I've had it happen numerous times and it will happen overnight. I keep amdro out around my hives all summer

Re: Does mowing field massacre bees?

Look on the bright side, less died than if it were burned. We burn a lot around here, it doesnt cost fuel, plus it kills a lot ofweed seeds. Take him a little honey and ask him to let it stand as long...

    Re: Feeding in the fall?

Sweet brazing. For those less talented use a hole saw to cut the cover,
punch holes in jar lid, stick jar in hole. When not feeding, leave empty jar, or cover with duct tape.
  15. Re: Fall flow in central North Carolina?

Re: He just keeps hanging around

Chicken wire on the ground won't stop him/her. It might improve your ground if you have extremely dry or rocky soil and you attach your ground to the chicken wire. But I'd move the hot wire to the...

  19. Re: What to do with frames with SHB if hive dies?

You should see the feeding frenzy when you put one of those SHB wormy frames in a fire ant nest. Cleaned up in no time and ready to be put back in service.

    Re: Abandoned hive

    Re: Abandoned hive

I don't know any beekeepers that don't want 4 hives of their own gear back. Hives in a rural area, you could get hurt or locked up over. You better call the owner yourself.
