Re: Wanted ideas for locust flow

Keep them from swarming. I thank Walt for that trick.

Black Locust honey is water white. Any color imparted to the honey is due to secondary sources of nectar. If you want to obtain the most...

He purchased two packages. All the bees left when the queen died and went into the hive that was queenright.
  4. Just when you thought you saw it all . . . lol

My Buddy purchased a package to replace a hive that died this winter. He never installed a package before, so I let him watch me install one before sending him on his way. He was going to install...

Re: 4 days after install and they are GONE!

I too purchased a package of bees this year and had the queen leave the hive the day I released her. I installed her on 10 frames of built-out comb. The bees accepted her. I released her, and two...

Re: Years since I've seen a honeybee

    Millenia,

I treat with MAQS once in the spring (after the black locust flow) and once in the fall (after the goldenrod flow). I found that to be extremely effective, and extremely easy to do. I...

MAQS is an organic treatment. You can be "organic" and still treat very effectively for mites.

Re: Years since I've seen a honeybee

Stansuch99 - I never said that bees cannot be kept without treatment if you are a new beekeeper.

oh, and by the way, I agree with you that I think it's irresponsible for anyone to say bees can...

Re: No ice for bee sting

It's a wives tale that keeps getting perpetuated . . . Get that stinger out FAST . . . IT DOESN'T MATTER HOW!!!!! Stop spreading that myth.

Re: Years since I've seen a honeybee

Yes you do. You need to start out with bees having hygienic traits or they will die. In my opinion it is irresponsible not to treat unless you know you have hygienic bees. Let me give you an...

Re: Years since I've seen a honeybee

I have two booming hives in my back yard. I hardly see a honey bee on my property. They are genetically disposed to travel farther from the hive to look for food. Could you imagine if all 20,000...

    Re: Timing of nectar flows

Go to NASA's honeybeenet page and look at the nectar flow data for hive scales near your area. You'll learn a lot about the flows.

Re: Checker boarding with medium or shallow?

I checkerboard with shallows. An added benefit to checkerboarding is that there is no need for spring feeding since, if you truly checkerboard correctly, you place alternating frames of honey above...

Re: Platform Scale Up and Running (pics)

This is something I know a lot about. I've been keeping a hive on a scale for 4 years now. It's been a lot of fun, and allows me to collect varietal honey very easily. You can easily tell when a...

Re: Dead Out Question - Alcohol Wash

Yes. That's what I'm thinking too. A 3% infestation rate on DEAD bees is probably a lot higher in reality.

Dead Out Question - Alcohol Wash

A buddy of mine wound up with a dead out. Plenty of bees in a ball, frozen in place, with brood, and plenty of stores around the brood. I believe he had a 16" ball of bees, dead.

    He did an...

    Re: crystallization of different honeys?

I was told that the higher the glucose, the quicker it crystallizes. All honey contains mostly glucose and fructose.

Does anyone know the glucose/fructose ratio for various honey varieties? If...
