If the ants get too bad around one of my hives I draw a bead of grease (used for my tractor FEL normally) around the base of the hive. Ants hate greasy feet. :)
Tempered glass. Has held up for seven years now and looks, well...clear as glass. Hard to break too but did cost me 90 bucks.
Not "oops" paint but definitely leftover.

There is something to be said for the aesthetic value of having beehives around. It adds charm to the hobby and is the reason I too have colorful hives. Nice apiary you have there.
Oddly enough, I have been keeping bees for eight years now and have yet to get stung. I take no extra precautions, have four hives and one OBH. I make plenty of mistakes to be sure. I'm sure that...
Now I remember why I don't frequent BeeSource much anymore.
tecumseh with a little "t", I'm surprised you're still hanging in there after all this time.
Barry, maybe a sticky is needed to...
The first year I had my extractor I left it out for the bees to clean. The next day there were about 200 dead bees in the bottom. That was the last time I did that.

Looks to me like MB was addressing the original poster's query w/regards to his singular Italian Honey Bee hive.
Commercial beekeepers operate on a different level than your average hobbyist,...
>something like "Stupid Ideas in Beekeeping
How about "Dummies for Beekeeping"
There ya go, 7 beekeepers, 8 different answers. Welcome to beekeeping. :D
Now is when you should be removing the Apistan strips that were put in 6 weeks ago. It is too late to put them in now for most areas.
I'm pretty sure Mercedes puts those squirrels in there deliberately, don't they? Isn't that what makes the car go? :lpf:
You know, umm, maybe I'd better not go there....oh, what the heck. Officially, an acronym is defined as the first letter of each word in a phrase, when put together, make up a pronounceable word,...
>Having to extract over a ton of honey with one those isnt much fun.
However, if you have from one to 5 hives, hand cranking with a Dadent two-framer (like I have) IS fun. Sort of fits into the...
Dutch clover, needs water. St. John's Wort, prefers poor soil and looks better than clover. Not sure if bees like St. John's though, if they don't, they should. :)
I have one, used it a couple of times, then wished I had my money back.
If you use the hive tool that has a hook on the end and use leverage to pry the frame up, it is fairly easy to grab the...
I learned a lot the first year I had mine. Including how to spot the queen much faster. It certainly did impress my friends and relatives too. That is the first thing they want to see when they...
>The main reason is that a smaller area is easier to keep warm than a large area, if leave lots of supers on them in the winter it is harder for them to keep warm. The reason 2 deeps are a standard...
So when you've started your fire and it rages out the top of the smoker for a few minutes, it doesn't melt the rubber, eh?
If there is space enough for the bees to get in you may also be losing heat to the outside. Best to seal up as much as possible so heat can build up. I never see many bees around mine.
Helpful...
This weekend I will be bringing home three nucs to replace some colonies that died out this Winter. They will be installed in double deeps with fairly clean comb drawn on all frames. The hives have...
Like MB, I just use a nylon jacket with zip on veil and I do use gloves. Been working seven hives for 5 years now, harvesting hundreds of pounds of honey and still waiting for that first sting.
Ok, thanks folks. Now that I think about it some more, I will probably add two supers at a time being the optimist that I am, so it sounds like light won't pose a problem.
I modified three hive covers for top entrances which I plan to install on fresh hives using nucs this year. Afterwards, I searched this forum and read most of the discussions here on top entrances....
