Re: Treatment free, is it really that easy

Thanks Grozzie that was an interesting post, don't think I've seen the subject dealt with in that way before, very pleased you did the research.

In my country the most valuable crop and the one...

    Re: Top bar nuc size

    No.

    Yes.

Put an entrance at each end of the hive, then you only have 3 entrances running down each side. Put the middle of the three near the top of the hive, the other two near the bottom....

Re: Treatment free, is it really that easy

LOL I've just been pulling honey out of 3 frame nucs cos the queen can't lay!

But yes, I agree with the general concept a standard lang needs to pass some critical mass before it can really power...
  7. Re: Sustained Increase in Activity of Sugar Syrup Fed Bees

If undissolved sugar is fed in the normal manner ie as prescribed by mountaincamp or as you are with candy, they consume it directly. This is because the only way they can eat it is that as moisture...
  8. Re: Apilife-Var temperature requirements and use in hot weather

Don't have instructions in front of me but pretty sure 65 would be the minimum average daily temperature, not the most effective.

95 is getting too hot, yes, it shouldn't be used at that...
  9. Re: Sustained Increase in Activity of Sugar Syrup Fed Bees

Don't let the fact the bees moved from the honey to the sugar fool you into thinking they prefer the sugar. It's more that they see the stored honey as finished and safely stored, while the sugar...
  10. Re: interesting South Korean migratory landing board

Really enjoyed that video Sonoramic, thanks for posting. Looks like they actually camp and live with the bees during that flow.

Re the 6 tons 600 hive comment, I have a friend who kept bees in...

    Re: A problem..

Yes an open pollen sub feeder might solve it bees will take sawdust in lieu of pollen. They also like to drink horse pee but sounds like in this case it's the actual sawdust they after.

Re: Should I give up or try again?

I think you should both give it one more try. Some people are just unsuited for bees, my reason for thinking you should try again is that you have done a lot of research and tried pretty hard, even...

Re: I will never buy packages again.

A reason for that, is that often there is more than one way to do something and get reasonable success, say, 90%.

What happens on chat sites is someone tried something and it failed, so they say...

Re: A Queen and 1 worker

OK well if a lot of bees have not hatched by now the remaining brood is likely dead, and the few bees will not be enough to raise any.

So the only hope for it is to add some adult bees.

    Re: Top bar nuc size

Bigger than you think you need is usually better. When there are not many bees in it you can always use a divider, but that extra room is handy if you have to put a feeder in there, or if you find...

Oh that's good to hear Ace, and yes you are right, going on what is often said anyway, a 3 year lifespan TF is doing OK for you.

    Re: Thrown into the Fray!

Ok well you can move the cut out comb into frames if you wish and I'm not disagreeing with the other posters, just presenting an alternative, a different way to skin a cat, of many that could work.

    Re: Thrown into the Fray!

The bees fixing comb you have cut out is difficult for them mid winter, I'm wondering if it's worth it.

An alternative way would be check if you can take a comb with brood from one of your...

Ace I read your description with some amusement, you do have a sense of humor, and it was pretty funny.

    Re: Paint the inside ?

One thing I should have said before, inside the joints should be painted before assembly, and also the top and bottom ledge of the box. Not doing that can shorten the life of the box.

Re: I will never buy packages again.

Then there must be a fortune to be made if somebody started selling "feral bees". An honest product that is not bred to die, would surely take the market by storm. It's so simple I wonder why people...
