Tx all, 2nd year beek. Makes me want to tear through the hive and kill every last one. I had thought that the SHB's were not a big prob. up north, or at least in CT.

Checked my inserted bottom board yesterday.

V Mite drops have decreased. But, I found then found these two buggers hanging out on the bottom board!!!

Not sure if this one larva is wax moth,...
  3. Wax moths, found just a few, indicator that there are way more?

While I was in a rush to button up one hive for winter I found 2 or 3 1cm long white worms with the brown/tan head. Squished them immediately.

Later looked them up and they look just like wax...
  4. Re: Help sick bees what could be causing this and how should I treat the hive

I was in your position in mid September and the knowledgeable folks on this board let me know what was going on. Deformed Wing Virus is not good for sure. I did 3+ weeks of Api Life Var, then waited...

  6. Re: Shriveled Wings & Dying Bees - Will the Hive Make it!

Two weeks after I stopped API Life Var, I've placed a white sign board on the bottom board to catch mites that may fall. I'm shocked at the # of daily mites on the board. I'm not counting exactly...
  7. Re: Shriveled Wings & Dying Bees - Will the Hive Make it!

Last update. 10 days into the 3rd and last Api Life Var treatment. Yesterday witnessed still a good amount of bees in front of hive with shriveled wings. (ugh) Also witnessed 2,3 larva being...
  8. Re: Shriveled Wings & Dying Bees - Will the Hive Make it!

    Update:
Into the beginning of the third week of API LIFE VAR treatment of this hive. My observations after placing the third round of treatment is that the bees are taking the cookies off the top...
  9. Re: Shriveled Wings & Dying Bees - Will the Hive Make it!

Thanks to all for this spirited discussion. Basically I've decided to treat for the mites as I don't want to sit and watch them perish.

Mike Gillmore, you bring up an interesting idea, scaling...
  10. Re: Shriveled Wings & Dying Bees - Will the Hive Make it!

Should I continue my fall feeding while doing the mite treatment?
  11. Re: Shriveled Wings & Dying Bees - Will the Hive Make it!

wow, so I should expect a mass die off anytime soon huh. Right now the mortality is noticible but compared to the massive amounts of bees in the hive small.

Also, I put the mite medicine in the...
  12. Re: Shriveled Wings & Dying Bees - Will the Hive Make it!

Ugh, so are you saying/thinking a hive that is showing shriveled wings is doomed? Un-curable?
  13. Shriveled Wings & Dying Bees - Will the Hive Make it!

So my new this year Carnolian bees are sick. Yellow poop on the outside of the hive, bees crawling on grass outside of hive, a small # of larva being carried out of hive and many bees outside of...

Re: Is the entrance too small?

Love two things about your hives. First, the ventilation system and the sliding cover. Cool! The small holes will probably be covered by propalis though.

Second, I love the hinged blue...

    Re: Heat gun uncapping

My experience was not good. I found the melted cappings quickly ran down the frame and recapped other cells. A real mess. Love the concept but when you think about it the melted wax has to go...

  20. Re: Drone comb, lots of references to it, but what is it?

Tx! Wondering. To avoid the burr comb, how many frames should I manipulate the wax foundation to allow for some drones? Or is that discouraged as it will encourage drones all the time? Maybe...
  21. Re: Drone comb, lots of references to it, but what is it?

interesting. I use wax wired foundation and at times struggle with messy drone comb being built on the lower edges of the frames. These lumps of drone come are a mess.

    For tidiness sakes I might...
  22. Drone comb, lots of references to it, but what is it?

I've seen FBM (Fat bee man) and many others refer to drone comb when looking at uncapped frames.

Do bees draw comb to be for drones? I know when there is drone brood, the bulbus cappings. But...

Re: Is the northeast in a dearth now?

Question, if there is a dearth (or at least you think there is one) is that a sign for a beekeeper to definitely harvest whatever honey they were planning on harvesting?

    I'm getting worried,...
