  1. Re: Hybrid TBH/Lang hive. Was: Bees won't move up into super, why?

Well full inspection completed, they are going well, about 50% of the drawn comb is now back in use and bees are beginning to occupy the super once again. Probably only for pest control at this point...
  2. Re: Hybrid TBH/Lang hive. Was: Bees won't move up into super, why?

Hi Colleen, not well at all. Due to having my final exams for my Pre-Med degree last month I missed them swarming and then (I think the swallows are to blame) going laying worker for a bit. So after...

    Re: Queen less topbar

Another thing you could try (has better success) is to graft in a queen cell or two. The way to get those in a hurry is to grab your queen out of the other hive, and a frame of workers (brood bar but...

    Re: Queen less topbar

Can you pull a bar of eggs/young brood from one of your other TBH? Give that to the queenless hive and if there are still drones about (a big if I know) then let the raise a new one...
  5. Re: Worried my brood isn't warm enough......

Just an update, virgin queens hatched out just fine, and are now mated and laying. Funny thing is these are second generation wild fertilised and have gone from tan abdomens to near jet black like...

    Re: Glass Jar Beekeeping?

Must be a cool climate thing, here if I tried that today (hit 98 in the shade) I fear it'd be a right mess for the girls to clean up. That said neat idea if you can do it!
  7. Re: Worried my brood isn't warm enough......

Thank's Oldtimer, answers one question at least lol.

Ok I added two more qc (grafted in) near the center of the colony, where I found a couple of fake QC ie as this hive hasn't had a queen in...
  8. Re: Worried my brood isn't warm enough......

That's my worry, the QC are as the donor hive had them, so this might be an issue. The donor hive still has ~7-10 QC so I could move a couple more and this time graft them to the face of a frame,...
  9. Worried my brood isn't warm enough......

Ok, so I have a laying worker hive (again) this time due to Lord only knows what as I was in hospital have an elbow reconstruction over the period when the queen would have to have disappeared. (I...
  10. Re: Has anyone here made a TBH out of fence pickets?

Try your local glaziers/glass suppliers, the crates the glass is delivered in is great stuff (1 1/4" by 6" by 10' often) and is usually pretty free of excess nails. I've found them to be (compared to...
  11. Re: So I was wondering what pollen my girls were bringing home......

The sample was from bee-bread, suspended in di-water, morphology didn't change over the course of an hour or so so I figure there must be a fair amount of water in bee-bread.

    Interestingly both...
  12. So I was wondering what pollen my girls were bringing home......

Ever had that moment where you'd love to know where your girls have been? Well I was surprised when I took a real close look at the pollen they have been bringing in. I picked three odd colours...
  13. Re: Hybrid TBH/Lang hive. Was: Bees won't move up into super, why?

So I ended up having to split this hive again as I found the new queen *and* freshly capped swarm cells...... These weren't there, not even as cups, on Sunday!

I also split my other TBH (used...

    Re: Bee sting

Took two hits over the weekend both from my calmest hive.... Once on the finger tip (no swelling, but the tip is still sore) and once to my bearded jaw, no swelling again, very unusual normally I...
  15. Re: Hybrid TBH/Lang hive. Was: Bees won't move up into super, why?

The gap is just on a beespace at 10mm (12-13mm with the slack between the fit of the bars) anymore and I find the comb falls in summer as there isn't enough surface area to attach the comb to on the...

Re: what do you think of her

Amazingly lucky! I thought I was lucky to see one of mine leave on her mating flight......
  17. Re: Hybrid TBH/Lang hive. Was: Bees won't move up into super, why?

About 1/3 capped, mostly a wide top ribbon but one or two are mostly capped so soon I can probably extract a frame or two. Or I could build another super and then leave them run till November-ish and...

    Re: Swarm Trap Question

Would love to know this! Mainly as I'm just entering swarm season here in Australia, so optimising my results would be great.....
  19. Re: Hybrid TBH/Lang hive. Was: Bees won't move up into super, why?

Had to split it today, 6 occupied queen cells, on two frames, only upside, as they had drawn all the comb to within a bee space of the hive floor (screen over plywood) they have few places to build...

    Re: VARROA pressure

YAY! I'm not the only one who loves gabled hive covers! All mine are gabled, not just for the looks, but they shed water better when it rains too.... There are other benefits too.

    BTW I would...

Poll: Re: How did you help your your "weaker" hive

That weak (laying worker for a bit even!) hive is now one of my strongest, not the strongest but pretty close!
  23. Re: Hybrid TBH/Lang hive. Was: Bees won't move up into super, why?

I did some rearranging yesterday, so I hope it staves things off for a bit. The super is filling out well, though they seem to be repurposing the three spare bars I put in there (had nowhere else to...
  24. Re: Hybrid TBH/Lang hive. Was: Bees won't move up into super, why?

I'm going to have to split this hive soon as they have started queen cups and as congested as the brood area has gotten, amazing the difference a week makes, it won't be long and they will swarm. My...
  25. Re: Hybrid TBH/Lang hive. Was: Bees won't move up into super, why?

Excellent! I know they are busy in the super, I tapped yesterday and the roar was there as well as the TBH deep.....
