  1. Re: Changing Ultrabreeze zipper to plastic

    No!
    Don't change it.
Yours having the brass zipper is one of the major reasons I bought it.

    Re: Marking a hive

I use a strip of duct tape & a permanent marker.
Gives me the ability to record dates, queen status, when things have been done, etc.
Just pull it off when no longer needed.

    Re: Smoker Fuel

    I use Pet Bedding.
It's wood shavings packed and sold at stores like Tractor Supply and Wal-Mart.
    Cheap and easy to use.
  5. Re: Bear-proofing that is safe for children and pets?

Bears are predictable. In fact, bears are usually more predictable than people.
No need to sit in your yard 24/7
In my observations, it seems that they almost have a schedule to them.
    Locate them...
  6. Re: Bear-proofing that is safe for children and pets?

A 12 gauge slug gun works pretty well for me.
Young kids are not permitted to play with it and I don't hurt any pets with it.

  8. Re: Vitamins, electrolytes and PH in winter feed

I use the vitamins & electrolytes she uses in my regular 1:1 syrup feed along with other ingredients.
Complete bee nutrition goes a long way.
My bees consume it like mad and I do think it makes for...
  9. Re: Bees under the hive on bottom screening. What to do?

With the foragers stuck under the hive unable to deposit their stores and go back out into field until they do, it can really cut down on the hives productivity.
  10. Re: Bees under the hive on bottom screening. What to do?

This has been my experience as well.

Re: Drones seem to be missing ???

A bit early to be kicking drones out for winter.
I have seen them being kicked because food/stores being low.
I would take this as a clue, check on them and see if they need fed.

    Re: oav nucs

I pull my frames and vaporize in a spare 10 frame deep box.
I use a couple pieces of plywood for a lid & bottom and seal with rags.
Treat and then move the frames back to nuc.

    OA Vapor and Feeding

New to the OA vapor treatment world.
On my 2nd treatment of 3 to ensure that they are healthy for our fall flow.
I was wanting to feed; Is there anything I should be concerned about with feeding...

    Re: Double four frame nuc

Share the resources among you hives.
Take from the strong and give to the weak to give them a boost. Either among weaker nucs or full sized hives.
But make sure you understand why the weak ones are...

Re: Help! Need idea to save these bees.

    Use a pool cover.
They go to a reliable source.
If the water source is not always available to them they will look elsewhere.
  20. Re: Multiple things going on, confused on if I'm doing this right.....

    My hives are bearding too.
It's not a heat issue, it's an unemployed forager issue.
We are in the midst of a dearth. Nothing for them to gather.
So, there is a bunch of hang-abouts around the hive...

  22. Re: leave partial supers on? flow is over... they need winter honey

I use the Mann Lake frame feeders with caps & ladders.
I believe they are called the "Pro Feeders".
I prefer the gallon sized but have a few of the larger 2 gallon.
So, I give a gallon at a time....

    Re: Backflipping bees

The worker was evicting the drone.
Kicking him out because of lean times.
The drones only mate and eat. As we get into the summer dearth forage dwindles.
Less food for the hive. So, they are...
  24. Re: leave partial supers on? flow is over... they need winter honey

    I don't.
After the spring flow is over and we go into the summer dearth I take the supers off, feed and treat for mites.
Getting them built up ready to catch the fall flow.
Then when it hits I put...
  25. Re: Small Hive Beetles situation in your area

    Not a problem here.
When I do see them they are usually an indication of a failing or struggling hive.
Easily remedied by reducing the area that the bees have to defend or giving the hive a boost...
