I asked this question last week: http://www.beesource.com/forums/showthread.php?282264-Package-with-drawn-comb
In my experience, since asking this question, they were probably ready pretty close...
I think it's going to depend on the timing of the alleged swarm. Do you think they just swarmed or do you think they swarmed 2 weeks ago? If they just swarmed you should have capped brood, maybe...
I can't tell from the resolution of the photo but I can say it's more likely than the first photo circled just by the quantity of bees. The queen is usually on a much more populated frame.
I've done packages before with no comb. This year I got a few 2# packages and put them on drawn comb (with a fair amount of honey on them).
I'm just curious if there are a different set of rules...
Doesn't seem likely that the queen will mate up in MI at this time of year. So I'd be worried a supercedural cell will do no good regardless.
I haven't read the whole thread where this is likely mentioned but these are tracking cookies setup by the advertisers. I think generally these can be avoided by not allowing third party cookies (an...
Also make sure if you move them a short distance (less than 2 miles?) that you trigger a reorientation or the bees will end up back at their original home site (with no box to get to).
I ordered a full size ventilated suit from them for my daughter. It was shipped I think within a week (this was probably in April). The size ended up being way too small so I returned it for one 2...
You are correct (obviously a 1978 newspaper would be yellowed). But if you go and toss that picture in the mail and send it to yourself, the post mark should set an upper limit (whereas the...
I'm curious about how bees will get to their hive if it's moved periodically a small amount. I have three hives in a line on a stand kind of like this:
__1_2_________3__
Now, I have been...
I use all 8 frame mediums so what I am hearing is I need about 16 frames for these nucs... I have a couple of nucs I made early in the season and have been stealing frames of brood from them not...
Michael, just to be clear here: Your two story nucs are 5 (deep) frame nucs (10 deep frames total)? I just want to make sure because I think your climate and expertise is probably a pretty good...
How many eggs are one those frames? I worry you are using brood that is too old from the comments about "capped/uncapped brood."
One of my hives lost its queen this year (likely due to me but I'm...
The cells can be hard to spot and it's possible you missed one. That's my guess.
I agree with the couple hours of queenlessness.
Photos are a bit fuzzy but from what I saw it looks like a bumblebee.
I used the plastic frames just because an "emergency" arose and those were what my hives have mostly right now (trying to regress). For real queen rearing I'd use foundationless.
I'm hoping to...
About 1 week ago I noticed a lack of eggs in one of my hives and following some advice from Mr. Bush, I tossed in a frame of eggs from another hive. A few days later I repeated with another frame...
And most of all make sure the honey is branded.
Personally, I'd look into a trail cam.
Just to answer my own question: the Pigeon Mountain "small" full suit is probably about right for a 7/8 year old. It's quite small though. My petite wife/daughters all could not fit into it. My...
This was interesting to me so I read up a bit. I have seen claims that they can/will/do eat bees so might not be compatible with an apiary. I'm just curious how close you have these to your bees,...
Probably let them build it. Is it on the face of comb or on the bottom of a frame? Most likely it's a supercedural cell (face of comb) to replace the queen you got not a swarm cell (bottom of...
The 30 hornets vs 30k bees video is a japanese hornet or something that's the size of your hand (I think it's 4" long). That's not a normal "United States" hornet.
I would guess they were building comb. Were they a loose pack of bees (probably comb building) or very tight and agitated (balling queen)?
I see a lot of the dangling strings of bees when I...
Seems to me like maybe you split them a bit thin with what you describe. You might wait and see what happens with the queens. Maybe you can make a few mini nucs to keep the queens around for an...
Do you have any comb with honey you can give them? It was pretty cold when I installed (not 20's but I seem to recall 30's for about that week). I made sure to give each a few frames of syrup/honey...
