Re: Double Nucs, has anyone tried....

I used a deep divided with a piece of 1/4 hardened Masonite on the bottom . The supers are a deep cut, divided into two by cutting in half and a piece of hardened Masonite nailed on the outside of...

    Re: Inspiration to keep going

    Agreed.
If the boarder opened could you imagine the increase in CCD come September?
For the huge guys who are run by dollars only, it would make good business sense for accounting.

    Re: Inspiration to keep going

You are totally right as it will bring back the old way of getting rid of your bees, save money and go on vacation until spring.
But does this type of bee keeping do anything for the health of the...

    Re: Inspiration to keep going

There is a huge opportunity for bee producers to make large increases in Canada and over winter nucs for spring sales. This will pretty much stop Canadian interests in sinking any money into a bee...

Re: Double Nucs, has anyone tried....

I have been treatment free for 2 years as far as Varroa goes and when I see more Varroa than I like, I install a drone brood frame, take it out and freeze it after it's capped. I do feed Fumigilin B...

Re: Double Nucs, has anyone tried....

    CtyAcres,
All my supers are deeps and styro. I made a 1" Imrie shim out of styro with a 1 1/2" x 1/2" cut out for an entrance.
I also have 3/4" round holes in all the supers above the handles...

Produced 400# but the height wasn't easy to deal with and they drew out nice frames.

    Vance,
I didn't double wrap it as I had them in poly boxes. Sorry forgot to mention that because I use all poly boxes up here in the great north. LOL

Re: Double Nucs, has anyone tried....

I wintered 1 hive that way this year as I tried the 2 queen system (2 divided brood boxes) with an excluder on top of that. They sure suppered up quick and the honey was just under 400#, I knocked...

Re: Double Nucs, has anyone tried....

    Jeyster,
I can see using a double screen board, so they can't communicate with each other.
If they are allowed to pass back and forth, you will end up with all the bees with only one queen.
    If...

    Re: Nuc Prices

If I paid those prices it would be a deal.
$170 for a package & $200.00 for a 5 frame nuc, if you can get them in Western Canada!
But with the CDN dollar so low it gets closer! LOL

Re: Bee package box design or how to?

So these plastic package boxes are 5.50 FOB the warehouse if you buy 180 and there are none available until next year.
    So fairly reasonable, I guess.

Re: Will bees make honey from opium poppies?

I believe it would probably be expensive as the production is quit low as the bees can't find there way back to the hive.

Re: Bee package box design or how to?

    Thanks Graham,
Great idea, sent an email to see how pricey.
If you got the boxes back it might make the cost worth while?

Bee package box design or how to?

    Hi all,
Can anyone offer a site that shows production of bee package boxes or a supplier that sells the cardboard / mesh side boxes?

Re: What to do with foragers

Michael, the flow weakens to almost dearth situations around here as there is no canola or much to supply much nectar and the hive would collect a negative supply of nectar after they fed.

Re: What to do with foragers

Ok, take the bees that swarm from a hive. I believe most if not all of those bees are foragers, along with the queen. (correct me if I am wrong). If the hive was reduced to a new queen with a box of...

  25. Re: Cold outside but Bees hovering outside of hive

Are there bees outside the hive dead from this?
If they have food and there's not a bunch of dead bees, maybe it is the house bees looking to do their first orientation flights?
