Re: what % of colonies are productive?

By manipulation of brood supers, by splitting and making nucs, and by supering. Maybe I should say by rotating brood boxes and supering and then by pulling brood and honey frames to make nucs or...

Re: what % of colonies are productive?

You control your mite loads too, don't you?
  3. Re: What species did Apis Mellifera displace in North America?

Where don you think they came to the Western Hemisphere from? They didn't originate here all on their own. They originated from Asia.
  4. Re: People actually make a living with honey production??

If you all had been at our meeting here in Syracuse, NY today you would have some idea about what it takes.
  5. Re: What species did Apis Mellifera displace in North America?

May have displaced some other similar species. May have enhanced the environment.
  6. Re: People actually make a living with honey production??

Angelo, what do you do for a living? Do you make money at it? How much?
  7. Re: What species did Apis Mellifera displace in North America?

Native pollinators pollinated the native plants they evolved with. When we brought European bees to this continent we also brought plants. The people who did this knew what they were doing.
  8. Re: People actually make a living with honey production??

Angelo, the simple answer is that I have not worked as hard as I can to replace the losses I have experienced. I went from 732 in May 2005 down to 432 by October 2005 and down to 100 by may 2006. I...
  9. Re: People actually make a living with honey production??

We all start somewhere. Or don't.
  10. Re: People actually make a living with honey production??

What is an "oncoming problem"? Is that a Vermont term of which I am not familiar?

I imagine that Kirk gets to more meetings each year than I do. He has to generate some extra income from...
  11. Re: People actually make a living with honey production??

Being realistic, it isn't something everyone is cut out to do and at which to be successful. It isn't for the faint of heart or those who don't have a willingness to stick to it when times are tough...

    Re: Insects feel pain?

Is what is in a species best interest played out evolutionarily? Isn't best interest a subjective idea?

If drones feel pain when they mate, do you suppose other drones notice and decide not to...

    Re: Insects feel pain?

Okay, my mistake. Following your logic then, do bees feel pain?

    Re: Insects feel pain?

You see me as the enemy to begin with so anything I say something you are all ready to see what I say through that lens. Were I a troll would I be so out in the open, real, and accessible Marysia2?...

    Re: Insects feel pain?

And since insects are animal they too must feel pain? Is that your point? I don't see how your logic necessarily holds water.

I ask questions and make statements too. If you see that as baiting...

    Re: Insects feel pain?

I guess if you think something is so, then it must be so. Lots of people do that every day.

    Re: Insects feel pain?

    Ouch, now that hurts.

No, actually I left on my own. I was not tossed.

Just because I didn't express myself well on the subject of pain about whether insects feel it or not I don't see why you...

    I don't have a stinger, do you?

That's what a stinger is a modified sex organ. I don't get where you all are coming from.
