    Re: Overwintering a light hive

    Would we think that this is a better option than leaving the double deeps and emergency feed all winter?

    What should I do with the other 10 frames...well probably only 6-7 are full, but the...

    Overwintering a light hive

    Is it too late to reduce down a week hive to a single 5 frame nuc or maybe even a double 5 frame nuc for over wintering?

    Situation I have described in another thread is that I have one 2 deep hive...

    Re: Hive Weights

    Thanks, I am feeling OK about the winter.

    As far as mite testing, I guess I was getting a little lazy and using the "I don't know how" as an excuse to not learn how. I will do the test this week....

    Re: Hive Weights

    OK, I have done my research on the Mountain Camp Rim and sugar feeding and I have two questions

    1. One person used a queen excluder, while others didn't, why would one use a queen excluder vs...

    Re: Hive Weights

    Okay so I am told 150 pounds is mandatory for two deeps by the locals. I looked last week and did see eggs in the brood chamber, I think possible there was a late season (Late July early August)...

    Hive Weights

    Okay 3 hives, hive A B C have the following configuration and weight

    A = 2 Deeps, 75Lbs
    B = 2 Deeps, 126 Lbs
    C = 1 Deep, 2 Mediums, 106.4 Lbs

    So my thought is this, Split Hive A and give...

    Re: Mites?

    This makes alot of sense. I try to stay out of the brood chamber as much as possible and since this hive has been grouchy, I really really tried to stay clear. Maybe I should have taken heed of the...

    Re: Accounting for Bee Keeping Associations

    Doesn't the association have a current system for accounting that you will inherit? If it is not new, take a look at what is currently in place and augment accordingly. If the association is new,...

    Re: Plastic Top Feeder?

    Thanks everyone, I like the Fat beeman's top feeder, but I am not interested in buy or building one this year, probably a winter project. In the mean time I will go with my thought of a plastic top...

    Plastic Top Feeder?

    I am getting tired of filling my feeders every other night, 2, 1 quart glass feeders on each hive are only lasting 2 days. So I was thinking about putting two larger, 1/2 gallon plastic top hive...

    Re: Is the northeast in a dearth now?

    First year Beek. Consensus is that the NE is in a dearth, and I agree. Northern Vermont is definitely in between flows, BUT, my question is when will the fall flow start, for how long, and what...

    Fall Flow in New England?

    First year beek and I think the main summer flow has ended in my local as there is no new comb in my queen right hives for the last week or so.

    As a newbie, what should I look forward to in a fall...

    Re: Is comb building over?

    I started 3 hives with both Deeps and Mediums this year completely foundationless and had almost no issues with Whacky comb. I had to fix 1 cross comb once, and that was it. I wouldn't be worried...
  22. Re: Transitioning June nucs from deep to mediums, foundationless

    I also start my hives with foundationless mediums with the intentions to go all mediums, but one absconded and the other was really really week. So I ponied up and bought two nuc's and two frames of...
  23. Re: Transitioning June nucs from deep to mediums, foundationless

    Messy! I did that with the comb on the bottom of the picture above, I wouldn't want to do it again, so I will avoid allowing them to draw in open spaces again. And to add to the mess, it dropped...
  24. Re: Transitioning June nucs from deep to mediums, foundationless

    I would be carefull putting a medium in a deep or a deep in medium hanging into a deep. There is so much room below that the bees will build comb on the bottom of the frame. After I did this, Mr...

    Re: Is the northeast in a dearth now?

    I could be wrong, but in my area, North western Vermont, my hives are slowing comb production. It has been about 2 weeks since I put the first honey super on my strongest and it has barley any comb...
