Re: I hope I didn't OD my bees on OA

I weighed out 2.5 grams and it was about a half teaspoon. 2-3 grams per double deep is what I heard from somewhere as the recommended dosing.

I hope I didn't OD my bees on OA

My plan this year for each double deep hive was 3 OA vaporization treatments 5 days apart using 1/2 tsp of OA each time. I did these in August. Than just 1 treatment this month. I used 1/2 tsp of the...

Re: Farming practices on my bees

Dobee.. do consider the advantages of starting with 2 to 3 hives also as opposed to one hive. Your original post included the word "hive(s)" so that's good. Definitely hiveS. You will learn much more...

Re: Hives made out of cherry?

What Mr Beeman and Michael Bush said.

Since it's free to you, cost is not an issue but weight would be. The dang boxes are heavy enough when full of honey.

But there is a thing of value too....

Re: Winter Hive Weight in Indiana

I am in lower Michigan and looking for 90 lbs of honey at a minimum. I don't have a scale so I look at honey frames and estimate from there. A full medium frame for me has been weighing 4 lbs each (9...

Gotta love the local advise! However, when I clicked the link it took me to your fb page but I didn't see any pics of mouse guards.

    Re: Time for mouse guards?

Greg, I used 1/2" hardware cloth last year and did not have any mice but I have heard that a mouse can get through that if they really want to. I'd like to find some 3/8".

    Time for mouse guards?

I just noticed the next several nights are getting into the low 40's. Probably time for mouse guards, yes?

What criteria do you use to determine when to install them?

    Re: What is OAV?

The term "phonetic mites" refers to mites that cling to the bees as opposed to the mites that breed inside the cell with the developing bee.

Varroa mites are the greatest single threat we have to...

Re: Possible bear in uncommon bear area

You might be right. I don't think anyone around here uses bear fences they are so rare around here. But 5 years ago or so a guy caught a bear busting into his hives on a game camera just 5 miles from...
