    Re: roughcut lumber

    Silverbackotter...

I stick dry all of my lumber for at least one year. Several stacks in the barn have been strip staked for three or more years. A 12 inch poplar board will shrink about 3/4...

Re: Help: I have pulled an Acebird

It will be large enough if you move the bees away each time you get 3 to 5 pounds of bees in the nuc. If you are going to do an elimination trapout, and the tree has 15 pounds of bees, they won't...

    Re: DIY Hive Boxes, etc.

You can easily, safely , make commercial looking handles with just a skil saw and two C clamps. The plans for the jig are in the beesource.com library and a link to the u-Tube video to show how to...

    Re: roughcut lumber

    ChrisBex

In Kentucky I pay 48 cents a board ft. for pine or poplar sawed 1 inch thick, 12 inch wide. For cypress I pay 50 cents a board ft. for 12 inch wide, sawed 7/8 thick. Most of the mills...
  6. Re: Frame top bars popping off, seeking opinions from the group

bbruff22.... I do not want to embarrass anyone, but, who made those frames?

Your problem with top bars coming off is, the ears of the end bars are not snug with the top bars. So the glue is not...
  7. Re: Recapture a swarm off of my hive...

I would leave them until Spring. Even in Georgia there isn't much time left for them to clean a new hive, settle in, the queen start laying, and prepare for Winter.

Over the Winter, I would set...

Re: What is that in the honey frame?

I would say it is likely pollen, and yes it will alter the taste, if you are trying to maintain the taste of say Brazilian Pepper or some other flow. Yes, pollen is sometimes stored, then moved...

    Re: Need Trap-out Expert Wisdom

You can find queens all year round. During the Winter months you can get them from Hawaii. I think they are called Kona (sp) queens. I have not requeened in Kentucky after the 15th of September....

    Re: Need Trap-out Expert Wisdom

    I agree with jredburn...

An elimination trapout should be finished in 6 weeks. The bees have to be getting back in some how. Otherwise the colony would be so depleted that it could not...

    Re: Bee Trailer

Trailers/wagons are a great idea for a variety of beekeeping situations.

In the 1990's, Kentucky was trying to transition from growing tobacco, to raising watermelons, pumpkins and other vine...

    Re: Need Trap-out Expert Wisdom

I don't think PVC is the problem. Most observation hives that i have seen, use PVC, and observation hives tend to swarm badly, and the queen comes out through the PVC. I have used PVC many times...
  13. Re: Raising queens/ is it practical for a hobbyist?

With good hive management there is no reason you should need a new queen for a couple of years. However if you are afraid you are going to somehow kill her, then I too would recommend you start a...

Re: Hives made out of cherry?

Sell the cherry, buy pine or poplar, for your bee equipment. Cherry will work, just more expensive.

In a cone funnel trapout, it is highly...
  16. Re: Odd looking structures on bottom board

I would bet they are propolis ladders. Most bottom boards are 5/8 to 3/4 inch from the bottom of the bottom bars. They don't lnormally build a lot of these during the Summer, but as fall comes on...

  20. Re: Honey spill attracts thousands of bees in North Fort Myers

The lesson I took from this article is, people need more information about honey bees, and some way to expel the rumors that all bees in all situations are killers.

I posted this remark on another...
