    Re: Controlling Small Hive Beetles

Tractor supply sells diatomaceous earth in 20lb bags. I think the price is around 20 dollars. DE works great as long as it stays dry. I used it in my trays and liked it . Heavy rains, water would...

    Re: Controlling Small Hive Beetles

Strong hives and keep them in full sun as stated. Also any open knot holes or crevices inside hive bodies or supers should be filled in with wood puddy. I also stopped using inner covers. Inner...
  4. Re: Feeding Pollen sub powder inside the hive?

Makes a mess as stated. I don't use pollen patties because of shb. I made some bucket feeders to open feed pollen substitute. My bees have been going nuts over it for a while now. When I...

Re: Bees are ignoring top feeder

A deep with 1 frame of brood? Why such a low population? Too much room to heat and defend. With such a low population it would take a while for the level of syrup to decrease enought to see. You...
  6. Re: When is a telescoping cover better than a migratory cover

I use both but scrapped the inner covers. Inner covers in areas with shb gives the shb a place to relax away from bees. Yes the bees glue telescoping covers down but not bad enough to be a problem....

Re: Retiring a brood box, How to?

I would also wait till spring then take a look in the brood box. Have your replacement box ready with frames and foundation. Try to use as many of the old frames of drawn comb as you can in new box....

Re: True definition of "overwintered nuc"

I agree that a overwinterd nuc is one that has queen and brood that has overwinterd together that will be set to build up early spring. A head start on a traditional nuc. I bought 3 from a friend...

    Re: Help, I messed up

Make a quick migratory cover. Don't worry about painting it. Cut a 1 1/2 hole in the center. Fill a quart mason jar with 2:1 syrup and put lid on and poke 4 small holes in center of lid. Put this...

    Re: Buckfast

Why Buckfast? What do you want from your bees? Honey production? Survivability? Gentleness? All those traits can be found within SC. If you are looking for a strain just like Brother Adam had I...

    Re: Vinegar?

I add 1 tbs concentrated bleach to 5 galons of syrup. Keeps feeders clean and keeps syrup from spoiling. This I learned from Randy Oliver's site as well.

Re: Frequency of hive checks in the winter?

Matt in our area you only need 1 deep for brood and 1 medium for stores. I would combine the two mediums to make.1 medium with 10 frames of capped stores. This gives the bees a smaller area to heat...

If indeed the iron levels in bees is higher when using wired frames is that a bad thing? I use pre wired foundation and horizontal wire my brood frames for extra support. I have not seen any...

Re: POLLEN PATTIES OR DRY POLLEN FEED??

If your hives are light on stores you should be fine feeding a 2 to 1 syrup. Pollen patties down south are shb magnets. You should have natural pollen year round.

Mark I heard from someone today that aerial spraying is going to be state wide. This will continue until weather gets cold. You might want to check with the county you will keep your bees in. Every...

Re: sqkcrk goes south for Winter 2015-16

Good timing. I was just notified that my county (berkeley) is going to do emergency aerial spraying for mosquitos. This is because of water from our 1000 year flood spraying times 430pm to 7pm. I...
