Re: Wax production and summer solstice...

    wcubed,
Can I get a few more details on your comb feeding technique? This might be just the trick I need to get that comb drawn. If used in the spring will they back fill the brood nest? How do you...

Re: Wax production and summer solstice...

MTBeeGirl, it is risky with the winters that you and I have... I am experimenting with splitting a two deep brood box now with a walk away split, just at the end of honey flow. I am hoping to get...

Re: Wax production and summer solstice...

So... if I pull the frames of honey from my supers and replace with foundation and then feed until I notice a fall flow I should get some more frames drawn. Can I extract those sugar syrup frames and...

Re: Wax production and summer solstice...

Thanks for the input everyone. I was concerned that if that solstice story was the case I would never have any drawn comb as I try to build to 25 hives. I am at 7 now and want to do a walk away split...

    Wax production and summer solstice...

I have heard that wax production slows dramatically at summer solstice. Will bees still pull foundation after the solstice? If so, how do I encourage it?

    Thanks,

    Re: tansy ragwort?

I live in an area with common tansy. If there is nothing else for the bees to work and they feel under supplied they will work it. The honey smells like a barn yard but has not killed any of my...

    Hopguard II

Does anyone have any experience with Hopguard II? Just wondering if it is effective and worth the money... also does it have an expiration date?
    Thanks,

  9. Re: how to get bees into hive , not a bee keeper.

Put that hive close to the bees now....they may just move in.
  10. Re: how to get bees into hive , not a bee keeper.

Place the hive with the top off and a few frame from the center removed directly under the swarm. If you can cut the branch from the plum tree, do so and with one hard shake, shake the bees into the...

Re: Felling a bee tree... which direction?

So here is the deal on the bee tree. It is a Grand Fir...meaning it has a genetic predisposition for rotting from the inside out. There is obviously a cavity 30 feet up, which means that it has a...

Felling a bee tree... which direction?

I found a Grand Fir bee tree yesterday on my place with the entrance 30 feet up. I can fall it east/west or north/south. The entrance is on the north face. Does anyone have any guesses or rules of...
  14. Re: Spring feeding in the north, When and how?

Thanks for all the input.... at that time I did nothing except hope I had fed enough in the fall. I was worried more about chilling them than starving them. The first day the day time temps got near...
  15. Re: Spring feeding in the north, When and how?

This hive is light and I am worried about them. This weather may last about a week or so and then the high temps will be low 30's for most of Feb. If I put an empty hive body on can I just pour...
  16. Spring feeding in the north, When and how?

This is the first colony that I have ever wintered this far along. We are getting some nice warm days...low 40's and cold nights still...15ish and I am wondering if feeding is a good idea now? Should...
  17. Re: First cut out. When can I add another brood box?

Well, I suppose it is time for an up date. I left the super on for a couple of weeks with absolutely no activity in it, so I removed it. I have been feeding and they are taking about a quart every...

    Re: Opinions, please....

If it were me in your shoes, I would get a mason's chisel and a hammer.... and take that wall apart like it was made of legos. Get some brood in your hive that way.

Re: Honey bees in a cherry tree branch

The cut out went really well. VERY gentle bees. I ended up putting them into two brood boxes. The bottom box has all of the wild brood in it and two frames of foundation. In the top box I put two...
  20. Re: First cut out. When can I add another brood box?

So, I guess I at least got the small entrance right. What is the best way to deal with wild comb then? Do you guys just leave it and work around it? Or remove it at some point?

  21. Re: First cut out. When can I add another brood box?

Thanks guys! We are in the middle of a clover bloom, this is the main honey flow and will last a couple of more weeks. I will start to feed just before it starts to fade. Against your advice I put on...
  22. First cut out. When can I add another brood box?

I just completed my first cut out. This is also the only hive that I have so I don't want to make any mistakes. I ended up with 5 frames of brood in rubber bands and filled the rest of the brood box...

Honey bees in a cherry tree branch
