  1. Re: Do honey bees like Snow drops and snow flakes

In New Zealand, the bees are flying all winter as long as the day is good so I think the snowdrops will be a good addidtion to my spring bulbs.
  2. Re: Do honey bees like Snow drops and snow flakes

I might try some of the older varieties of daffodils then with my snow drops.

    Re: Help, aggressive bees

I've not really experienced that problem but If I did I would buy in a queen from a reputable queen breeder that has gentle bees and get rid of the present queen. I would hate to have to kill a queen...
  4. Do honey bees like Snow drops and snow flakes

I have a lovely garden of spring flowers, mainly daffodils, which I don't see my bees on. I am wanting to plant more bee friendly bulbs for spring and heard that snow flakes and snow drops are liked...
  5. Making icing sugar for varroa treatment

I am going to try icing sugar as a treatment for varroa but I have read that it is not good for the bees if the icing sugar has cornflour in it. Ours in NZ does so I tried to blend sugar in the...
  6. Re: Will the queen stay out of shallow honey supers?

So I'd probably be better to place a full depth super above it then I guess. I was thinking a half depth would be better because it would be more stable in our winds.
    The temperature here in winter...
  7. Will the queen stay out of shallow honey supers?

I have built a long hive that fits 21 full depth frames and to reduce weight of lifting thought I would place shallow (or half depth) supers and frames on for the honey supers. I was wondering, if I...

Yesturday I fed my bees sugar fondant with homemade honey bee healthy. It is Autumn here in NZ and the bees needed a bit of a top up to hold them through the winter. Since then there has been unusual...
  12. Re: 4.9 small cell plastic foundation without frame?

Thats interesting. I don't mind it in the plastic frame but its so expensive to have it sent to NZ. I saw some on ebay but it ends up really expensive when you add on the postage.
  13. 4.9 small cell plastic foundation without frame?

Where can I buy 4.9 small cell plastic foundation sheets for langstroth hives. I am after the sheets only without the frames so it will be cheaper to send to New Zealand.

  22. Re: Can I put 3/4 depth frames into full depth long hive?

Its taught me one thing and that is to remain with one size frames & supers from now on, its much easier when you want to put brood or honey into another hive.
  23. Re: Can I put 3/4 depth frames into full depth long hive?

Awesome, thats cleared that up then, I won't be putting those frames in without creating a false bottom. Thanks for your help both of you.

Re: How level must a hive be?

Its not 3/4 inch in, the bubble is 3/4 of the way in the line so 1/4 of the way past the line. Does that make sense? The bubble is mostly inside the line by 3/4 of the way.
  25. Can I put 3/4 depth frames into full depth long hive?

I have a full depth long hive and I was wondering if I put some frames of bees from a 3/4 depth box into it, would the bees fill in the bottom? I know if I put 3/4's into a full depth verticle hive...
