  1. Re: How much honey is consumed over winter months? Not much

I had a large hive with over 80lbs of honey. They consumed all of it and starved in February. Being so cold in February, I could not feed. If I had known they were so short on honey, I would have...

    Re: ANGRY Bees

A queenless hive can get very angry. Try and find her to make sure you have one. If you have a queen, she should be laying like crazy. I would requeen to get good traits.

Stuart..This looks exactly like mine. I was thinking the same thing. Gosh, two beekeepers with the same answer!! Were yours two story NUCs?

WBVC--Sounds good, but we don't have drones yet. We have capped brood but no hatches yet.

Moving a double NUC to a hive body

I have a double NUC that I made from a split last June. It is really booming, even now in Indiana. I would like to move it to a Deep HB soon to slow down swarming tendencies. My question: Do I place...
  6. Re: What do you think happened to this hive?

It is hard to tell from one frame, but the frame you pulled is empty, and the dead bee is buried head down. This is a common occurrence that we see in Indiana. It usually denotes starvation. I don't...

Re: Need some help with splitting

    Charlie,

By the date I split this hive (30 May), it was a triple deep. I took 2 frames of brood, making sure there was at least one frame with fresh eggs that had been laid. With my eye sight not...

Re: Need some help with splitting

My build-up was probably a month. I have never moved a queen. With all the activity in the spring I would lose count on my NUCs on which ones were new and which ones had an older queen. I made my...

Re: Need some help with splitting

Here is a split I did last spring that worked exceptionally well. I read about it somewhere, but I can't take the credit. I had a strong hive that made it through last winter. I had a hunch that this...

    Re: Late October Swarm?

WE call that bee suicide in Indiana when one swarms late.
  12. Re: Yellow Jackets robbing hive how to stop

I had the same problem. I put them in a double 5 frame NUC stacked on top of each other. This reduces the space, and allows them to protect the entrance. I then closed off the entrance to about 1...

Re: Checked hives - new question!

Here up in central Indiana I had the same scenario as you. I had supers on with little honey build-up. Yesterday I pulled the supers off hives that had no honey. My thinking is that as winter comes,...

Re: New Nuc getting robbed and beat up

I should have thought of that! I have been doing that with splits before. I made 3 splits from a great hive in early June, left them there and moved the parent hive up the hill. Those 3 Nucs filled...

Thanks Peter. I have been feeding through the top. I will do as you suggest. I guess my sister who lives about 5 miles from here will babysit the bees for a while.

New Nuc getting robbed and beat up

I made a NUC from a good hive. All went well for a while. Now the Nuc next to it which is a month older is robbing the baby Nuc and treating it rather harsh. The new Nuc is making queen cells and is...

I saw on Youtube of a beekeeper in Alaska who is mite free. He is secluded, has mountains surrounding him, and he lives in the valley. The mountain range keeps his bees within his ecosystem. His...

Pollen is probably from Ragweed. We have tons here right now...as verified by all those folks with hay fever. Need rain here also...19 days without rain. Need the rain to juice up the goldenrod.

Luckily I have a lot of swamp milkweed and some hemp dogbane that keeps them busy before goldenrod. Swamp milkweed is a great nectar source.

You might want to remove the entrance reducer. That would allow more bees to come and go, and also improve your ventilation. You have plenty bees to have a robbing problem...Rick

Great advice! I will place another nuc body on and place a feeder in it. That will keep the syrup fairly warm and get the syrup to the cluster. Thanks for the advice.......Rick
