  1. Re: Queen mating flights - alone or with workers?

After reading the link, ive witnessed the same thing from small overcrowded nucs, but have never been able to identify a virgin flying amongst hundreds of other bees and to be honest would question...
  2. Re: Queen mating flights - alone or with workers?

Im fairly confident if it was something that happened regularly I would have seen it in our mating yards.

If it was part of the mating process it would happen every time, which makes me think...

    Re: what is going on?

The two hives that have robbers could be queenless.
The hive with no robbers is queenright.
    .
  4. Re: Queen mating flights - alone or with workers?

Ive seen this numerous times but only in nucs that are too strong.
My theory is that its more like a swarm response but because the queen flies off as soon as she leaves the nuc the bees may cluster...

Re: New Beekeeper, Lots of problems

I think you need to find out for sure if you have a queen.

The bees in the photo look pretty old to me and I think your hive is queenless.
  6. Re: Some bees crawling in grass in front of hive

It looks like you havent had brood in that hive for a long time going by the amount if pollen in those frames.
I dont think your queen is viable I think theres something wrong with her. :(

    I'm...

    Re: Do worker bees toot

The only reason I saw it was because i was caging queens and the bee that was making the sound was on the frame i was looking at .

It was very weird and have seen it only once since.

    Re: Do worker bees toot

Ive seen and heard workers "piping" and its indistinguishable from a queen. I saw the bee that was doing it and it was very agitated and fast on the comb darting here and there . It would stop and...

Re: Two hives side by side

Did you check for a laying queen?

How about mites are the bees healthy?

If you have a laying queen and no mite problem thats good, they are just reluctant to move up. By bringing a frame of...
  11. Re: spacer between honey super and brood box?

Rather than using a spacer you can just set the honey super back on the excluder just enough for the bees to get in and out, about a centimetre of excluder wire showing works well.

    As the...

Re: Two hives side by side

Yes that will help , but I would check first to make sure all is well with the hive, has it gone queenless, swarmed? Or is it just generally weaker than the other hive
  13. Re: Bees keep building comb on inner cover?

If the space is too deep between the hive matt and the topbars of the frames the bees will always try to fill it with comb.
I took this explanation from beekeeping.com bcause they have explained...

Re: Have a queen, no eggs or brood

Your queen should have come with attendants in the cage she will be fine with them for a few days keep her in a warm place but not in the sun of course.
You can knock the old queen off and introduce...

Re: How long do I wait?

Im sure she will be fabulous!
  17. Re: I think I messed up...Two questions.

If your bees came as a nuc then there should have been a frame of honey and pollen alng with some brood frames.
When you installed the nuc into your hive did you notice if there was a honey frame ?...

Re: Have a queen, no eggs or brood

As I said before your brood is dodgy. Have you sighted the queen?

I wouldnt rely on getting a decent supercedure queen out if any queencells built using the larvae available in this hive.

    If...

Re: Best suit for extra small female?

You could probably wear a tulle veil over an ordinary brimmed sunhat?

I wear a jacket with a fencing style hood and love it easy to flip up and down and great if you are driving from yard to yard...

Re: Have a queen, no eggs or brood

I dont like the look of your brood, theres far too much drone brood and when you enlarge the photos there are dead larvae in a slumped "c" shape at the top of the cells very much like half moon...

Re: Bees left hive, grouped on ground

Like Adrian im also wondering about sugar syrup being fed.

If you have only been feeding fondant and you have no honey flow the bees wont be able to draw comb.

The fondant will keep them alive...
