  1. Re: Tips on keeping a honey extractor from "walking" during spinning

Well it was a huge improvement over last year! Thanks for the idea, the casters worked great! I got 11 gallons from four shallow supers.

Re: Brush, fume board, or bee escape?

Do bee escapes work if they have more than one super above them?
  3. Re: Tips on keeping a honey extractor from "walking" during spinning

My extractor doesn't have legs. I bought a small pallet on caster wheels at tsc and will try strapping it down tight. It's has four swiveling casters so not sure if three is the magic number but we...
  4. Tips on keeping a honey extractor from "walking" during spinning

I'm getting close to extracting and am looking for ways to keep the extractor from wanting to walk all over the place when I spin it. In the past it's taken more energy to hold it still than to turn...
  5. Harvesting honey this weekend - I have a question

Hopefully someone from lower Michigan or a similar zone can chime in. I'm harvesting two hives this weekend that have two shallow supers each of capped honey. I usually wait until later in the year...

Re: Wet supers back on hives questions

I'm planning on extracting in the next few weeks and for the first time put the wet supers back on the hive to see if I can get any additional honey before winter.

Re: upper entrance, yes or no?

According to him a little rain doesn't hurt. This is a strong hive too so no problem yet with robbers.

Re: upper entrance, yes or no?

This year I'm trying setting my supers back about 1/2" from the brood box below. Was a recommendation from another more experienced beek. The bees seem to like it. Besides coming and going from...

  10. Re: Need recommendation for the new hive and drawing comb

Any problems with drawing the medium frames longer in a deep box? Once we have two deeps full of wax we could slowly replace the medium frames (with deeps) and put them back into the medium box and...
  11. Need recommendation for the new hive and drawing comb

I picked up a medium 10 frame nuc for a neighbor over a month ago. I use all deeps for my hive bodies and shallow supers. I put a new deep with plasticell on top of the medium nuc and began to feed...
  12. Re: quick question - what to do with gunk after melting wax?

Give it to the chickens - they love it.
  13. Re: Global weirding in Minnesota, how to prep for overwintering?

I'm putting the feed to them while the weather allows, although my hives are on the light side.
  14. I need a solution to a "walking" honey extractor

I bought a newer 4 frame extractor from a friend, not sure what brand, and it is quite a PIA when extracting. You practically need to be sitting on it to keep it from walking away when you're...

    Re: Is this Robbing? (video)

I debated about splitting the hive earlier, but with only the two hives, and at that point my other hive was just starting to rebound from going queenless, I was concerned I would screw things up and...

    Re: Is this Robbing? (video)

That hive is my experiment at wintering in 3 deeps. It was a strong hive last year that I put a third deep on to winter in. They made it through our brutal winter and were strong right from the get...

    Re: Is this Robbing? (video)

So in an orientation flight, are they primarily new bees leaving the hive for the first time? Why would an older bee that's come and gone multiple times need to re-orient?

    Re: Is this Robbing? (video)

I built a robber screen for that hive just because of the close proximity to this hive, but so far no robbing. It does have a good population in it, just not much evidence in this video. It came out...

    Is this Robbing? (video)

I'm in my 4th summer keeping bees, not an expert by any means. I'm curious about the activity on my big hive yesterday afternoon. This is much more activity than I normally see and I first thought...
  21. Re: Any reason NOT to just dump sugar on the inner cover?

You want to put in under the inner cover on top of the bars (over newspaper) so the bees are closer to it in the winter. I've had success with this method the last few years.
