Re: Possible bear in uncommon bear area

You might be right. I don't think anyone around here uses bear fences they are so rare around here. But 5 years ago or so a guy caught a bear busting into his hives on a game camera just 5 miles from...

Possible bear in uncommon bear area

I live in a populated area where there are lots of residential homes on .5 to 1.5 acre wooded lots. There is a bear sighting maybe once every 3 or 4 years. Yesterday on the back of my wood shop I...

    Re: South African hives

Wow this thread makes me grateful I live in a cold climate and don't have to deal with AHB and the like. I don't know if I'd keep keeping if I were keeping what some of you are keeping. I respect...
  8. Re: Two honey harvest, each different, one a little aftertaste

There shouldn't be any goldenrod in this honey. I don't think. Other Michiganders may have better insight to this. The questionable batch was collected August 15 and was fully capped. I don't think...

Yeah I know that Ray. I was looking for something more profound. Lol. You are of course right on correct.
  10. Two honey harvest, each different, one a little aftertaste

I took 2 small harvests this year just a couple weeks apart. The first crop taken was August 5th. It was very light, almost citrusy and crisp, very clean tasting. Amazing. The 2nd harvest taken...

    Re: South African hives

Welcome Gary to the site. I think it's fascinating to hear about keeping bees in such a different situation than my own. I look forward to hearing more from you. And good luck. 47 stings in one...

    Fall split questions/ advisable?

I have a 2nd year hive that has performed outstanding since it's first day. It currently has a strong population, lots of resources and with the goldenrod flow going good, I may need to add a super....

    Re: Smell of a hive

To me goldenrod smells like slightly pungent butterscotch. I hope it tastes that way this year. Last year my bees found some buckwheat and my fall honey was very dark and sour at the end. didn't care...
  16. Re: OA vaporizer - dedicated battery or the one in the truck?

Thanks everyone for the great thread. I treated 3 hives with my vaporizer tonight. So easy.
  17. Re: OA vaporizer - dedicated battery or the one in the truck?

That's doable. I like the price.
  18. Re: OA vaporizer - dedicated battery or the one in the truck?

Video of my open air test today. Power was a battery charger set at start mode, 12 volts, 55 amps. 1/2 teaspoon of OA. I've edited the beginning of the video to shorten the wait time. Vaporization...
  19. Re: OA vaporizer - dedicated battery or the one in the truck?

I tested my vaporizer in the open this afternoon. Put a half teaspoon of OA in the bowl and attached it to a battery charger set on start mode... 12 volts/55 amps. It took 1:30 to start vaporizing...
  20. Re: OA vaporizer - dedicated battery or the one in the truck?

David, how is the extension cord configured? I assume it's modified. And how long is it?
  21. Re: OA vaporizer - dedicated battery or the one in the truck?

Thanks drlonzo. My charger has a couple different 12 volt charge modes. It also has a 12 volt engine start mode and that is the one at 55 amps. Which mode would be best? Charge or start?
  22. Re: OA vaporizer - dedicated battery or the one in the truck?

How much did the battery pack cost?
  23. Re: OA vaporizer - dedicated battery or the one in the truck?

I have a charger that runs 55 amp. But a auto battery is typically 700-900 amps.
  24. OA vaporizer - dedicated battery or the one in the truck?

Just curious if I can attach a JB200 style vaporizer directly to the battery in my truck or if a dedicated battery is needed? I only have a few hives and don't want to spend another $100 plus for a...

    Re: fall feeding ?

Stoney, use white vinegar - not Apple cider. It will help retard any mold growth. It will also change the pH of the syrup and the bees will like it better.
