Thanks for all the replies.
I'm cleaning out a dead hive and there are 10 beautiful frames full of pollen from last Fall. No obvious disease is evident.
Is this pollen in theses frames still nutritious and will bees in my...
In the past we have taken too much honey and fed back sugar water in the Fall. We plan on leaving a lot more honey this year. Several of our hives have 4 medium boxes for a brood area and 3+ full...
I believe you are right about mites being a problem, too. I'm guilty of not performing an "after mite treatment" mite check. This was the first time I used HopGuard and used only one application...
Acetic acid can be used to sanitize hives after nosema problems. Is it possible that the use of formic acid for mite control might also have a secondary affect on any nosema spores present in the...
The results are back from the bee lab for my 12 hives.
All 8 dead hives had nosema counts of 5-70 million spores per bee.
The 4 surviving weak hives had less than 1 million...
Thanks for the responses. Heaflaw, those were two nice links......Thanks
I sent samples from all hives...dead or alive. The hives had no fecal spotting inside or out. I'm just not sure how to prepare the hives for the next package of bees, ie. cleaning or sterilizing....
Here it is. http://www.ars.usda.gov/Main/site_main.htm?modecode=12-45-33-00
Their results turnaround time for my last sample was about two weeks.
I checked all my hives with the last warm spells. Only 4 out of 12 are alive and they are weak. There was plenty of honey/sugar water and some pollen. Test results from the Bee Lab in Maryland for...
We will be talking about the SHB at our next meeting. From reading the forum, I've made a list of recommended practices and preventions found in the different posts. We are open to all ideas....If...
Thanks for the quick responses. (Although a few answers were somewhat..... "suspect")
I'm going with...RESPIRATION
This is probably very basic but I don't know the answer......Is the rhythmic pulsing of the bee's abdomen have to do with respiration or circulation or both?
I pledge that I will be a BSA beekeeping mentor if they reinstate the merit badge.
If I read the background correctly on UTUBE, this guy is in Manchester, England...and the video was posted one year ago. It is frustrating to see.
I shortened my deeps on a table saw and they cut easily but when the blade hit the embedded wires, they were pulled out of the remaining comb and just left dangling in mid air. I cut them with...
Thanks for the replies. It makes sense when you can visualize the problems/benefits.
Hi all, please help with this basic question. For winter, which side of the inner cover goes down? The deep side or the flat side? And please tell me why again.
I plan on building outer covers and read a recent posting about it. Lowe's sells aluminum flashing 20'' wide.
Is there a certain thickness of flashing to build a durable cover?
Is aluminum the...
This is my first year and am sure I started treating too late for mites. I noticed "ODD" appearing brood and new bees were hatching with deformed wings. Many were seen just walking away from the...
As a new guy, I'm a little uncertain about the difference in "house" bees, the "field" bees and the "loose" bees.
I'm to shake the field bees off but shake some loose bees in and leave the house...
