Re: Caramel for the Queen Candy

I would not use caramel. If you overcook your sugar syrup you might as well make candy for yourself because the stuff gives bees dysentery. Stick to plain old white sugar. The corn syrup is OK as...

    Re: Alternative to beekeeper gloves

I use the goatskin beekeeping gloves from Bucko. I bought 3 pair from them and they are well made and a very fair price. When I feel I need my hands stung more I'll try something else. If the bees...

    Sounds like AHB to me.
  6. Re: BeeThinking on Shark Tank tonight at 9 PM ET

Nice presentation, but the major suppliers have nothing to worry about. The sharks were correct in them supplying the hobby market. Can't see those with many hives ordering several hundred hive...
  7. Re: Sand-like substance at the entrance on a hive

They are probably uncapping some honey to eat, so it's most likely wax. How is this hive's weight? You may want to feed if it is low.
  8. Re: Swarm cell found, now how to prevent swarming?

How about attaching an excluder to the bottom of a box and shake the bees through it looking for the queen as I beliieve Michael Palmer uses to build cell builders?

Re: Brand Newbee - Day 3 - Two Questions.

Two things. Ive heard that it requires a PM to Barry to get your location changed. Additionally, if you get a feeder like those sold by Mann Lake with the plastic insert the bees will be on the other...
  11. Re: Oxalic Acid Vaporization - Questions and Answers

I'm certain that it is based on volume. 2g for double deeps (or 3 mediums) and 1 g for a single. It's the area you are covering, not the number of bees for OAV.

Re: Booming to dead in 5 weeks

I have been using the Dadant winter patties for years with excellent results. The description at Betterbee makes them seem to be the same as the Dadant patties. This year I tried some from Mann Lake...

    Re: Spring feeding Dilemma

UltraBee is not the correct emergency feed. It's meant to be a protein supplement and not winter feed. They should be using winter patties for emergency feed if they are buying them. Much depends on...

Re: Do I need to buy bees?

The "Flow Hive" will not relieve you of the need to understand how to be a beekeeper. The bees can't live in that box alone. They need regular comb to raise new bees and winter on. I would not...

    Re: Spring feeding Dilemma

I'm feeding both sugar and pollen patties as of this week. I see at least one day a week in the forecast where they can have cleansing flights in my area. I want to make some serious nucs this season...

    Re: So excited

I'm with Enj. The only hives I have that have their winter preps off at this time are dead. Wednesday's high is supposed to be 37 here. Winter is not over quite yet here and PA should be quite a...

    Re: OAV Finally registered

I don't belive the states need to approve it since the EPA used what I think is Section 3 which approves it for the entire country. You might be thinking of stuff like HopGuard which has Section 18...

This is nothing scientific, but after watching one of my hives get vaporized through a clear inner cover I could see that after about 15 minutes I couldn't see any more vapors. This leads me to...
