Re: weird comb and exposed brood ... so sorry ...

Just wanted to point out the frames are tight together in the beginning when installing.
Yes, you got it,.. different race is the color,.. sometime bees drift into another colony.

Look for new eggs, sometimes the queen lay's in a day or two, but not more then a week.

Re: weird comb and exposed brood ... so sorry ...

Not to worry, all looks good, sometimes they do this, most often for drone brood, yours might be a case of spacing of the comb/frame not even, important to push frames together tight the first time,...

Thank you all for the advise!
No snake I've ever seen there, we got the odd little Garter snake but I don't think they can climb this metal pole
    or pray on birds.

Flight path is about the same as bees,..away from the trees/bush.
The first year, house had double compartments, ....something like 6"x6" and was on a wooden post about
    10 foot up....

    Purple Martin?

    Hi all!
I'm trying to attract them but the last two seasons a pair abandoned the house after about 2 or 3 weeks, they nested with 2 eggs then left, that was the first year,
    last year's I haven't...

    Re: buying swarms

A hive can have 2 or three afterswarms, I don't split, I check for swarms in the evening when the time is right,..like on a hot day in swarm season.

    Re: Maintaining amount of hives

I also like to maintain 5 hives, plus minus 2 or so is fine, I don't split, catch the odd swarm for winter insurance, that's all. This year I had around 950lb of honey from my 5 hives.

Re: If you crush and strain

I don't but I would think you need to let them more honey for themselves just for that reason. Somebody might have a better answer. Crush and strain never made sense to me.

    Re: Frames of honey

Freezing prevents honey from crystallization. Some honey will crystallize in the comb in about a month, this happened to some frames of my early honey this year.

Re: tap water and mixing sugar water. don't work!

I used to mix with hot tap water but never liked the results, now I heat it up and stir constantly until just starting to boil, sugar will dissolve allot nicer and doesn't get moldy as fast.

Some say leave it alone, it's a ladder for bees go quickly up an down, I remove it for easier inspection and not squashing bees when putting back.

Re: Serated Knife vs needle scraper for uncapping

I think it's called decapping fork, Vance is right,..lifting off the wax, most people don't know it works this way, scratching makes a mess. I love this tool, hardly any wax in honey.

Re: what should be where ?

They usually have brood in both boxes, the queen would move up in honey super also if you have no excluder.

I haven't bought any queens for several years, I believe in let them decide what's best, bees are smarter then humans.
