  1. Re: When transfering hives, make sure you have the queen

yeah, course if I had slowed down and had just a veil and my new tulle sleeves, I probably would have had time to find the queen so as to not be in the mess in the first place.
  2. Re: When transfering hives, make sure you have the queen

I wish i could but new hive is not as deep and wide as the queenright TBH. The queen-right hive has a 1x6 bottom board and the sides are two 1x8s. The queenless is all 1x10s. I do plan on making...

    Re: Narrow frame?

Odd, I have run a TBH and a Lang side by side, And I much preferred working my top bar. I can usually get away working my top bars without gloves and not get stung than I can with a lang. First time...
  4. Re: When transfering hives, make sure you have the queen

Thankfully the local Beek store was open on the 5th so I went ahead purchased a queen... sad part is I cooked her by accident while getting my smoker lit. Placed her in direct sunlight. Had to go get...

    Re: 'Follow the Honey':

Nevermind the fact that the "crisis" is being overblown by large amounts from the drive-by media. Never mind that there are a couple hundred THOUSAND more hives (managed) than there were before "CCD"...
  7. Re: When transfering hives, make sure you have the queen

Course there is option 6, put the weak hive into a nuc and purchase a queen.

I'm curious as to why you are not suggesting 4, other than the fact I'd be down to one hive.
  8. When transfering hives, make sure you have the queen

I finally went and moved the lang into the new top bar hive sunday. I couldnt find the queen but decided to just shake the frames into the top bar and hope she stayed put. Well, either she flew off...

yes, swarm, if you saw capped swarm cells, they swarmed. That could be an afterswarm.

    Re: Hybrid Lang/TBH

wouldnt have to cut them down, getting them out would be issue. I've had them attach from the bottom all the way to the top on the sides in my 10 frame deep, two weeks. I go out to my TBH and they...

    Re: top bar cutouts

I've found that zip ties can cause problems in putting the bars back the correct width, Masking tape can cause similar issues, but its not as thick.

Re: My bees HATE platic frames and foundation!

Bees will only touch plastic foundation if its the only thing they have left to work with. They prefer to work foundationless, but if they dont have that, they will start foundation. Plastic is a...
  14. Re: Day 50: My TBH box is 90% full... I don't know what to do.

one of mine might be about the same size, but I plan to try and super it next year depending on how well it does, and considering the fact that I doubt that they will be able to fill out 38 1 1/4...

I have to agree on the larger smoker. After using a tip from The Fat Bee Man, I've found a deep smoker would help keep things going for a while longer.

Re: Are they replacing the queen?

If you combine just make sure you dont accidently give it another queen, but yeah, at this point its probably a good idea to combine since you have some long and harsh winters.

Re: Now I wish I knew how to raise queens

Hmmm. I may have to look into that, but a couple layers of masking tape will work as well, bees will repair the comb and chew off the masking tape at the same time, so one layer doesnt always work as...

Re: Bee explosion and utter mess!

Jodie, Are you using the 1x2x8 furring strips sold at lowes/home depot due to being unable to source 1 1/4-1 3/8 bars? I have that problem so I have made do with the 1x2s which so far are working...

Re: These bees are wearing me out!

Aaaand here is why I like my TBHs. I have to build but once :D. If a 4ft hive fills out every single bar, its time to harvest some honey LOL. And $1.65 a lb is a rip-off for raw honey. That stuff...

Re: Bee explosion and utter mess!
