Re: Bee Working our Mountain Mint

Nice! We don't have much blooming right now. Goldenrod is coming soon, though. How does the honey from mountain mint taste?
  2. Re: crepe myrtles -- another "has anybody seen.....?"

I have 2 large crape myrtles in my front yard. the bees seem to like them.

Re: How many frames of honey to leave?

You should have a fall flow. Goldenrod should be blooming in late September. I would leave them one super to get through the summer dearth. The bees may have some of that left by the time goldenrod...

I second Brad Bee. I hate privet. It's like a giant noxious weed.

Re: speeding up my hive to honey

I don't think this will help right now, as there is not much in the way of forage. Looks like goldenrod will be blooming in a month or so. Your hive, if it is healthy, will probably be ready for a...

Re: Escape board or/and fume board?

My last honey harvest (3 medium supers) I used an Echo backpack leaf blower strapped down to my trailer. It worked fairly well, but the bees were NOT happy.

    Re: No Entrace Reducer

What Matt F said. During the spring and summer, I take the reducers off of my strong hives.
  11. Re: I nicknamed it "The Duggar" hive for a reason.

Is it possible that the bees you put in the split went back to the old hive and the queen slowed down because there were not enough nurse bees? Just a guess from an inexperienced beek.

    Re: What would you do?

The longer you let the problem go, the harder it will be to fix. Based on my experience, if you allow your friend to keep doing sloppy work on YOUR equipment, you will start resenting him more and...

Re: When can I move a swarm?

What Tenbears said. I would also put a queen excluder on top of the bottom board, just to make extra sure.

Looks like it gets the job done  what is this "three wheels on a board? Our extractor is like a mechanical bull, and I need some ideas on keeping it under control without bear-hugging the...

I've always heard that when you have 7 full frames, it's time to add the next box.

    Re: moving/selling my first nuc

I would put queen excluder in the hive, install the frames, and dump the loose bees in. The bees flying around after this will find their way into the new hive. You can do it after dark.

    Re: Extracting advice

If you get an extractor, you will also need an uncapping tank. I made one using a large Rubbermaid box, some dowel rods and a piece of #8 hardware cloth. You may also need an uncapping knife. ...

Re: Brood on top, honey below?

Drones can't fit through a queen excluder, so you will trap them in the hive. Also, like wild-b said, the bees will put everything where they want it anyway.

    Re: Strange Days, Indeed.

Nice pics. From my (limited) experience, once you know the queen is in the box, put an excluder on to keep her there. A QE and a frame of brood will usually make a swarm stay put.
