    Re: 1st Year Russian Hives

I couldn't find contact info on his website, but I'd like to double check on that.

WHOOPS! It helps if you scroll down the website. Okay, I'll contact him & check back.

    Re: 1st Year Russian Hives

bxtplus, is Bob selling queens next year? Or is he just selling nucs with queens in them? I need to check that out.

    Re: 1st Year Russian Hives

Where are you getting your queens? I'm thinking ahead for next year. I believe the person I got from originally will not be selling Russian queens next year.

    Re: 1st Year Russian Hives

We really, really need more Russian queen breeders in the northeast.

    Re: Is comb building over?

Good news, thank you. I was reluctant to put a super of empty foundationless on, now I don't feel as nervous about it.

    Re: Is comb building over?

I don't really use nucs, but I did start two 1-medium hives with queen cells, so that's kind of a nuc, but I don't feed them, I just put some honey frames in there. But I'll check them because if you...

    Is comb building over?

I'm wondering if they're going to build up the foundationless frames in the hive or whether I should pretty much write that off for this season. Is their main comb-building done during spring flow?

Re: Is the northeast in a dearth now?

I don't like them either. I know how they feel, lawnmowers, weed whackers and other loud engines really jar my nerves.

The spouse was out planting near the beehives tho, a week or so back, and he...

Re: Is the northeast in a dearth now?

A recent podcast I heard (Ohio State Univ) mentioned that bees respond to vibration, such as lawn mowers. If you had just been in the yard, they may not have gotten upset.

Re: Time to start thinking about winter.

For insulation, I wrapped styrofoam in black plastic contractor's bags (just to keep it in durable, reusable panels) and attached them to three sides of my hives using bungee cords wrapped around the...

Re: Time to start thinking about winter.

The simple answer is: start off with a whole bunch of hives and by spring hopefully you'll have some left. LOL.

Srsly tho, I'll be going into winter with 4 hives this year, the most ever, and I...

Re: Time to start thinking about winter.

I hear you, I'm facing the same thing now, and I'm noticing they're not all that enthusiastic about building comb right now. But I've put foundationless frames about every 2 or 3 frames in the honey...

Re: Time to start thinking about winter.

I have come to the conclusion that I am my bees' biggest predator.

I would like to have 10 hives just so that I can't pester them to death.

Other than that, I'm thinking foundationless frames...

Re: Time to start thinking about winter.

Harley - Were you going into the brood nest even thru the winter?

Also, stay out of brood nest. :)
  15. Re: So should queenless small split just be left to dwindle out?

    But then they'd be homeless.
  16. Re: So should queenless small split just be left to dwindle out?

Yeah, I think I'll do that. 3 frames of bees shouldn't cause much trouble anyway.

Re: Time to start thinking about winter.

Harley - have you ever tried Russians? Supposedly they are hardier/more mite resistant.

I am biased. I had 2 hives, one Russian overwintered fine, the other (Italian) died just like you described...
  18. So should queenless small split just be left to dwindle out?

The only unsuccessful split from a swarmed mother hive with lots of queen cells early in the season.

I would combine, but the workers have been laying (drone sized cells) and I'm afraid they...

    Re: Egg laying drones

"As far as how to fix the problem, a frame of eggs and open brood every week for three weeks should set them right."

Even in Minnesota in late July?

    Re: Egg laying drones

A lot of drones in the hive and brood falling off would signal to me that the hive probably swarmed. As said, leave the queen cells so they can get a new queen.

Are there any red flags to the...

Re: Is the northeast in a dearth now?

I thought about July for extraction - not that I've ever had honey to extract, but one of these days - but it doesn't seem like it would be capped in July and I'd rather deal with finished for sure...

Re: Killed my queen by mistake help

I noticed drone evictions yesterday during inspection too - saw a worker wrestling a drone and then they disappeared airborne.

I have a queenless split now, and I figured it's too late at this...

    Re: 1st Year Russian Hives

My first Russian queen was last year from Bob Brachman. That Russian hive made it thru winter when the Italian hive did not. Also it built up so quickly in the spring it swarmed just after I split...

Re: Is the northeast in a dearth now?

Oh, fine. Then I *will* check my hives today and see if they might need another super, esp. the 2 small new ones. I've been thinking about doing it, but really, they are so all over the plantain it's...
