    Re: The bear strikes again

I have a Parmak 12 fence charger and set up the Colorado Parks and Wildlife-Beehive Encloser design. No bears have gotten by it yet. Somethings I modified were grounding the gates with chicken wire...

    Re: The bear strikes again

Some states you can file a claim for bear damage through the State Fish and Game Office. You can also request they remove the bear for you or you can get a permit to shoot it. Just some possible...

    Re: Working a hive

I leave the brood nest alone unless something causes me move brood frames. This past month I had 2 queen failures that caused the hive to become honey bound. I removed some frames and extracted them....

    Re: vented bee suit

I have a Betterbee Ventilated Jacket that I like. You also have a choice veils which is nice.
I have the Round Veil and I like it for the hot sun. I will likely purchase a full suit next year....
  6. Re: Overwintering Nucs- Bees filling frames with honey

The last week I moved some capped brood to the top of the stack to make some space, that was a mistake. As brood emerged they filled it with nectar. My plan is to put comb close to where the queen is...
  7. Overwintering Nucs- Bees filling frames with honey

This is the 1st year making up overwintering nucs. I'm using the 4 over 4 MP nuc boxes. I have 4 setup as brood factories that have a third four frame deep on top. The problem is the bees are filling...

    Re: Online beekeeping courses?

I'm taking the Montana Beekeeping Courses. I think they are very good and worth the extra money.
  9. Re: Transporting hives to pollination jobs w/o a forklift

Have you moved the 2 way pallet with two deeps on each side? Do you think it would work with a hand truck?
  10. Robbing Screen- Will it cause bees to reorient?

I want to move a hive about 5 feet to the end of a hive stand. I have 2 singles on one end and 2 double nucs on the other end of the hive stand. The configuration I want is 1 single 2 double nucs 1...

Re: Looking for bees in upstate NY area

Look at Betterbee in Greenwich, NY. Pretty close to you. Take a look at their website. Consider overwintered nucs.
  12. Re: Summer Management for over wintering nucs?

I guess I'm not sure what your plan is and where your going to get the brood and resources to make up 20 nucs. If your using the 4 over 4 double nuc boxes, I pull 1 full frame brood, 1 partial frame...
  13. Re: Lots of eggs, no capped brood, very little forage (low workforce)

Maybe giving the bees a little 1:1 with HBH or Pro Health to give them a boost.

Re: These bees are wearing me out!

I hear you- I finally got a break for a week and flew back east to see family.

Couldn't pass up a queen rearing class at Betterbee though.

    Re: Brushy Mountain

I agree with skqcrk. Contact Brushy Mountain's Customer Service. It does no good posting here. I order some items from BM and expect slower shipping, so I'm not disappointed if there is a delay. BM...

    Re: Ventilated Bee Jacket

I just bought a Betterbee ventilated jacket (they also make the full suit). I have not used it yet. I like the round veil for sun protection in the heat of the summer.
  17. Re: My plan on overwintering 200 queens on mini-frames

    Thanks Michael
  18. Re: My plan on overwintering 200 queens on mini-frames

I'm considering overwintering 4 way mating nucs in a cold climate. Well- the 4 way really becomes a 2 way for overwintering.

Are the 8-10 frames per nuc enough or do I need to add a second level?...

    Re: Mann Lake Pro Feeder

I have both the Mann Lake and Brushy Mountain Frame Feeders. Both work well. The Brushy Mountain is narrower and has floats which reduces dead bees. The Mann Lake feeder is wider and holds more. I...

I still screw and glue woodenware. I use stapes, brads, and glue for frames.
  21. Re: Started a couple new hives in Steamboat Springs Colorado...

No such bee that I know of. Look for locally raised queens.

Go the Colorado Queen Honeybee Testing Project. These folks raise local queens.

Just prep your bees well for a long winter.

    Re: Wintering Nucs

I will be adding a third level to the double nuc setup this week. This is my 1st year using nucs, so the lack of comb is an issue. When I start to split the nucs- I was going to pull 1 frame of...
  25. Re: need advice! bear damage. possible queenless

A high quality/ strong electric fence and charger should take care of the problem. The Parmak Magnum 12s are good units for bears.

I would move the hive out of the area until you get the electric...
