I put a couple of 1kg glass jars into a black tub yesterday that I use to recover my comb in. Glass on top and by the end of the day I had 7/8 of the jars nicely liquid, the rest partially...
I am now starting to get the idea of the gentle application of heat. As a testa I have just put a barrel into a black garbage bag in the sun and a jar into a black tub with a sheet of glass on top....
Thanks Oldtimer, that's a great tip about the deep freeze. I suppose the cooling down is too fast for the crystals to form
Slicko
Its in both barrels and jars

Unfortunately I have quite a bit of honey.. about 60 litres that has candied.
What I would like to know is, is there a way (the easier the better) of re-liquifying it.. what gear would I need?
...
Unfortunately Max by leaving a frame with uncapped honey (and I imagine the emptied stickies from the extraction) in your hive you have given the shb the opportunity to take your hive out. You cannot...
In Brissy also
Do yourself a favour and search shb on this forum. There is quite a lot that had been written in managing them.
Frankly if they get away from you your hive is history

Looking forward to the video:D:lpf:

The following article appeared in the Brisbane Courier Mail today

It is amazing to know that the colonies have been found...
G'day from one Aussie to another. Welcome. Is that Crystal Waters just west of Malaney? Very pretty area up there around the Connondales
I also live in Queensland in Brissy.. have 8 hives and the...
Whilst never having removed a tree with bees in it, I think I would go about it this way.
I would clear the loose timber from around the colony and would make any cuts necessary to free the tree...
Cactii, They seem to be in a position where there is a lot of small and broken timber and your pic does not seem to show a tree as such. Is the colony housed inside a tree or is it outside the tree...
We use bungy straps to keep the lids on, Dubhe :D
Wollongong is one of our industrial cities just south of Sydney. It is however in some very pretty country and the people there are just great. No...
Hey Dubhe, I took the family into Canada some 22 years ago and although I was not keeping bees at the time I do clearly remember taking photos of beehives covered in snow just like your pic.
It...
Last evening there was a documentary on SBS channel (http://www.sbs.com.au/documentary/program/honeybee-blues/index) here on the impact of the Varroa mite on world honey bee populations. At this...
I have heard a lot about regressing to small cell and its benefits with control over varroa. Whilst we have no varroa here in Oz it is suggested that it wont be long before it rears its ugly head.. a...
Oh Omie, you are here too! Goodie.
I love those pics

The only reason you might want to check them any more frequently than weekly is to see if they are doing their job or if you have a heavy infestation. My traps have been in position since 1 October...
You can quickly and easily make a bee vac out of a lidded styrofoam box. Cut 2 holes, 1 in each end just a bit smaller than the vac hose.. 1 towards the bottom (entry)and 1 towards the top (exit)....
I have used glaziers putty to hold the top of my bb oil traps in place with no issue from the bees
I have also noticed that on some plastic frame sides that came in a nuc that they are also a...
Seeing the bees tear the wings off the shb must be a wonderful sight. I look forward to the day.
You might have something there Gene if you can breed them up.

By all means, Sarg, it is up to the individual how he treats his hive. I suppose that I am being pragmatic about the effort and expense both in time and $'s. I have no love for the shb and also take...
Gene and I are not saying not to use some ground treatment for the larva. It is more that the management of the shb within the hive is more crucial and that a hive that is being adequately managed...
I couldn't agree more with Gene. The danger time for the hive is when there is a population explosion of larva WITHIN the hive as this is the time when the damage is done. By the time the larva is...
