4 frame Nuc boxes, "Sustainable Apiary"

Do any supply companies sell the 4 frame deep nuc boxes as seen in Michael Palmer's "Sustainable Apiary"?
I suspect 5 frame boxes are a little too wide?

    Re: cleaning up deadouts?

So, it's possible to have nosema symptoms but it's not necessarily nosema? Could be just plain old dysentary instead?
  10. Donating bees from stronger to weaker hives?

Is it better to give a frame with brood or shake bees off and return brood to original (stronger hive)? I'm concerned about weakening potential honey producing hives? Any rule of thumb as to how many...

    cleaning up deadouts?

How much cleaning up is necessary, or let the bees do it? Is it OK to reuse frames that are moldy with dead bees in cells? How about capped honey w/ streaks of bee feces? I've fumigated with acetic...
  12. Anyone know where I can order package bees, or is it too late?

I'd like to order a few more packages but suppliers in New England are sold out. Has anyone had success with packages delivered via USPS or UPS ? Can you recommend a supplier?

How early can you start treating with fumagilin-b? It's cold, lots of snow on the ground.

Shouldn't there be some brood in each hive this time of year? I had a strong hive which produced a full med. super last month. Yesterday I observed a huge congregation of bees outside the hive, so i...
  16. Carniolan Queen from an Italian or hybrid mother?

I removed a few frames with Queen cells and moved them to a Nuc box to start a new hive. Much to my surprise, the newly hatched queen is black in color?

    Any theories?

    Re: Damaged Queen cell capping?

    Michael,

Need advice on a swarm situation? Replaced the queen to hopefully thwart the swarm impulse, but they swarmed with the new queen.
Now the hive is queenless since 5/29/13 with several sup....
  19. Re: Made 4 splits, then re-queened, but they swarmed anyway ?

Thanks shane! This hive had maybe 10 - 12 frames of brood in various stages. When you say open the brood nest, do you recommend aternating brood frames with empty frames? How many frames of brood...

    Re: Damaged Queen cell capping?

    Mike,

Thanks for the info. At this point , I'll wait a few more days to see if a queen survives. I thought I had 4 swarm cells in a cluster on this frame, I damaged 3. Still hopeful? Maybe...

Thanks! Let me know how she turns out? I recall doing this same thing 2 years ago with a sup. cell, they patched it up, but not sure if she emerged or was killed by another queen?

Queen was received via USPS 4 days after shipment, installed in hive, released and killed by workers about 28 hours after install? Should I have prevented the release? Partly my fault, I poked a hole...
